Problems changing late Father-in-law's Virgin account to his wife's name

My father-in-law died last November. Since then his wife has transferred all the other utilities to her own name with no problems.
Yesterday I spoke to Virgin about changing the name on his internet account to his wife's. I was told that the account could not be transferred, but that we would have to terminate his account and open one in his wife's name (even though the Direct Debit is coming from the same bank account). I asked whether this would be instantaneous or whether she might lose access to the internet for a period, and was told she could be without it for up to two weeks.
Surely this is not an uncommon situation, and I find it hard to believe there is no easy way to transfer the account, so I'm wondering whether anyone has experienced this problem, either with Virgin or with other providers.
