Megabus shambles

Despite the terms and conditions below, Megabus have just refused to refund any payment for a journey "amended" on their website. They took the full amount of the revised journey and when I emailed, their anonymous correspondent mailed back "no refund" without explanation. I feel like I have been scammed.

"Customers can amend a reservation only if this is completed more than 48 hours before the first journey you reserved is scheduled to depart for megatrain.com bookings, meagbus.com customers must make any changes 24 hours prior to the first journey departure on the reservation. A £1 fee (50p amendment and 50p booking) is charged for all reservation being changed. The cost of the initial reservation will be credited against the subsequent reservation . Should the subsequent order be less expensive than the initial reservation, no payment or further credit will be made to the customer, all unused credit will be forfeited. Should the initial order be less expensive than the subsequent order the balance will be payable by the customer at the time of booking"

I think the bit you need to read is the sentence after the one you have highlighted...
Should the subsequent order be less expensive than the initial reservation, no payment or further credit will be made to the customer, all unused credit will be forfeited.

Seems like you will not get refund whatever the circumstances.

If I'm wrong, please explain your situation in greater detail. e.g.dates and fares, both old and new.

If by that you mean Megabus took not only the full cost of the original ticket, but also the full cost of the new ticket, then agreed thats against their stated terms and conditions.

What they should have done is (as you've highlighted blue) put the cost of the ticket you've already paid for into the cost of the new ticket. If the new ticket is lower in value, tough luck for you, no refund or credit on the difference, if its more then you owe them the remaining balance.

Without wanting to make too light of the issue (I appreciate its a pain for you), but Megabus is hardly expensive to travel on - it was £5 from Bristol to Heathrow last time I travelled on it. The most uncomfortable seats in the world, but for a fiver, who cares.
  • . . . its the principle as much as anything. The original tickets were £15.50 and the replacement ones £22.00. They have just taken the lot and say I am not entitled to a refund even though the first trip is cancelled well within their timescale.

You are saying that you have now paid them £37.50?

If you are within their mentioned timescales, I believe you should have only been charged an extra £6.50 (maybe plus booking/amendment fees).

Pretty much what Bosseyed said above.
  • . . . indeed I have paid £37.50
