It's saying "Error ... cannot restore Hosts's files, so won't let me progress? Shall I forget this and now try the above?

Whilst pressing the SHIFT key, 'RIGHT CLICK' and select 'RUN AS' and try again

If still a no go then run combofix

Given up with HostsXpert ... won't let me do anything.

Tried COMBOFIX from your link and all it did when I ran the program was throw up a small grey oblong box with ComboFix at the top and a line of green vertical dashes below, then the screen froze twice and twice I had to reboot, so don't know what's going on  I did turn off AVG before.

Have to do away for a bit now, but will get to the screen every now and again to see what you recommend if you get the chance.

Thanks for continuing help ... much appreciated.

Are you up to date with your windows updates?

If so see if running mrt will shift something so you can download okay, it's basic but may help.

Just type mrt in your run bar and click OK

  • Are you still getting redirects from Google?

Can you find this on your computer - C:\ComboFix.txt if so post the log.

If you are having redirects and cant find the log try the following.

Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double-click GooredFix.exe on your Desktop to run it.
    • Select "2. Fix Goored" by typing 2 and pressing Enter.
    • Make sure all instances of Firefox are closed at this point.
    • Type y at the prompt and press Enter again.
    • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt).
Note: If you receive a message saying that GooredFix needs your system to be restarted, please close all applications and reboot your system. Please also allow any registry changes that may be prompted by any of your security programs.

Hi, tried again to download combofix and p.c. froze again and had to re-start the p.c., so have to give up on this one.

Can't seem to find Gooredfix to download, except on bleeping computers and p.c. won't let me get to it! Any ideas where else I can download it from as google's not much help.

    Many thanks.

Thanks ... had a blonde moment and didn't recognise this as link!

What's the mention of Firefox about though in red? I have IE8, so will it work with this and is it worth trying?

Rik, you obviously are more in tune with this than me,but is it possible to dump the host file?, i used to have a proggy that would do that..i'll try and find if it helps, is it still true that if ya can dump the dodgy hosts file, windows will recreate a new one...if the reg is clean of course...sorry for butting in, just throwing an angle at it.....I will try and re read, although you look as though you are very good hands with RIK...he knows his stuff and is trustworthy

willl hijackthis take it out?...but can you help by killing all the programs you are sure of?...either delte them or just stop them, there seems to be too many weird ones in there (obviously with a log print to you guys?)
  • i think its a polymorph in the reg.....(or did i just watch that on red dwarf! )

or am i barking (up the wrong tree)
