Hi,

I am thinking of getting either a Ford Focus (2004+) or Golf Mk 4. My primary desire is a comfortable car to drive, that is quiet.

Any recommendations between these 2 cars?

thanks.

    What's your budget?

Your money will go further with the Focus, imo.
  • Hi

Ive owned a MK4 Golf and driven my brothers Focus. Both have advantages and disadvantages. The Focus has better handling whereas the Golf will have a better quality interior & feels more solid. Although the MK4 drives like a sponge pudding round corners. Far too much body roll.

Could you stretch your budget to a MK5 Golf? I own a MK5 at the minute and they handle much better than the MK4 Golf and shouldnt cost too much more depending on which version you go for.

My budget is within both ranges. About 7k. Though I know I'd probably be able to get a newer car with the focus - but these days that's probably not an issue, with quality so high.

hehe, "tight_arze" i know what you mean about the sponge puddingness of the mk4. I used to own one. It's a mk 5 I'm looking at now (i made a mistake in the title). Are the mk 5s as quiet as the mk 4s? or quieter even?

I would go for the Focus but imo VW's are over-priced for what they are so the Ford would present better value for money and you'd more than likely get a better spec car

Both are good cars. Test drive both and go with the one you prefer. The VW might be more expensive but you'll get more for it when you come to sell it, so there'll be little difference in the actual depreciation.

Personally I'd go with the Focus, because of the better handling, but that may not be a priority for you.
  • tbh i found the interior of the focus higher quality than the golf MK5, the tiguan interior is !!!! poor - very disappointing , VW have been cost cutting, the reliably of the newer VW's is crap too, and that came from a mechanic working at VW lol

Would disagree with that, although the MK5 Golf did take a step backwards with the interior quality I would still rate it higher than the Ford Focus.

Now if you were to compare a Ford Focus interior to a MK6 Golf the Golf is leagues ahead. The Golf MK6 is what the MK5 should have been.

Personal choice, neither is bad. Take a good test of both, took my race licence in a 2004 1.6 focus and it was great.
