I don't have linux I have windows it will prob be the GL or the GS thats the most suitable then but I noticed on the pc world site that the WRT54GS has a UK on the end reading WRT54GSUK does that mean anything I should know about?

Sounds like the card I have is not as fast as this router but the prices I have seen for the GL without the speedbooster are similar anyway
    Thanx

The WRT54GL still works with Windows. Linux/Opensource is the internal OS of the router. The UK just means it's a UK version. They are all 801.11g 54Mbps wifi standard.

Like Lady K, I'm interested in a wireless modem with use with NTL cable broadband.

I am considering keeping my present desktop connected to the NTL modem via the usb port, and connecting the wireless modem to the lan port of the NTL modem, for use by a second desktop or a wireless enabled laptop. Would this arrangement work?

Secondly, do you experts have a recommendation for the adaptor to put into the second desktop? albertross's first link shows the Netgear WGR614 router costing £43.73, and the same page offers a several adaptors from £24 up. Are there cheaper modem/router/adaptors that are suitable?

Also, would this router still be usable if I changed from NTL in the future? The page says: "Broadband routers can only be used with NTL, Telewest Broadband, Blueyonder or any other Cable Broadband ISP. If you have a BT phoneline, see ADSL Wireless Routers instead."

Assuming the broadband router can still be used on changing from NTL to a different supplier, would I then need to buy a modem to go with the router?

    Many thanks for your advice.

A cable dsl router won't work with a BT line..you'll have to buy a new router if you switch.

Any G adapter will work, try ebuyer to cheap ones.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

My daughters gone to the shop to buy the WRT54GSUK

Shes got an acer aspire 1353 laptop and 3com wireless pc card her friend has a dell laptop and dongle. They only had the NTL cable installed today in my daughters room at thier shared student house. My daughter will want to use her laptop connected sometimes and wireless others will this cause any problems as there wont be any pc connected to it. Her friend will want to use the wireless from her own room.

Is it going to be ok and easy to instal as they are going to try and do it themselves? they arent very experienced at all with tech stuff. I read on the net that you have to unregister and reregister this router if you are using NTL is this correct? If so how is that done and does it involve calling tech support at NTL as they only have mobiles so I hope not.

Is there anything they should be asware of before getting in a mess and will it be likely they will have to udate firmware?

Also they have to encrypt this to stop other none contributing students using it will that be easy and easy to change code if need be later
    Thanx

This is part of the review I found on the net...

'I bought this to replace a wired linksys for a client. Used the setup disc which worked until it tested the internet connection, said there was no internet, but when I looked it was because with NTL you have to register any new PC or router by "adding" it (by way of a PID and password) before it gets access to the internet. once thtat was done - it works fine on the interent and the wireless, I used it with 2 wireless cards almost out of range, and when WEP was applied the signal couldn't cope. so I'm about to try a WRE54G range expander.'

I just wanted to check if this is right about registering new hardware and how to do it if anyone knows
    Thanx

Yes it is correct but nothing to worry about as the router effectively takes the place of the one PC allowed to be connected and any other PC's are connected to the router.

see this webpage for an explanation.
