TV Licence without reception

    I investigated this on-line a couple of years ago when I moved house & didn't want to watch telly, but did want to watch my dvds

    I can't remember the websites I visited (they tell me it's my age) ... but the gist of it was, if your telly's de-tuned & not connected to an arial, you're ok without a license

    it seems, according to the sites I visited, that this information is quite deliberately 'not made clear' by the licensing authority

    if I can find any of the the sites I got this info from, I'll post them later

    Derrick your advice was wrong. About capable Vs actively using to recieve signals. I can understand why you thought this at the time, I seem to remember TV licensing said it on their website (that if the equipment was capable you need a licence) They only told the complete truth buried deep somewhere else on their website.

    I think obviously all the complaints about their shocking misrepresentation of the facts has finally got through to someone, because they no longer say this ("capable") on the site as far as I can see.

    TV licensing site says you need to notify them of this, this is a new addition compared to what they wrote before the 2003 act, however, there is nothing in the act (afaik) compelling you to inform them. I believe they are lying when they say that.

    The advice to businesses (pointed out here in post #15 by johalareehi) on the tvlicensing site according to something else I read on the subject, has remained the same, i.e. you don't need licence, no mention of having to notify them. so there is a contradiction there, if it is still the case.

    Edit: Interstingly they have now re-worded the advice to businesses aswell.

    If you don't use any equipment to receive or record TV programmes, you do not need a licence. But we still need to hear from you. This is also the case if you use TV sets for closed circuit monitoring, as a computer monitor or watching pre-recorded videos only - for example, for training purposes.

    You must (my bold) let us know so that we can update our records to reflect your status. This will ensure that we do not continue to contact you unnecessarily.

    We may need to confirm your situation by visiting your premises.

    I still think they are lying, and will one day ask them where it says this in the communications act 2003.

    Also bear in mind that this is Capita plc who have no rights whatsoever to enter your property without a search warrant, and cannot caution you under PACE (as their letters threaten) because they are not a legal body, just a plc.

  • They are no more than a glorified debt collection agency - they make out they have "powers" which they dont and just hope people dont know! The only person who can get you done for not having a TV license is yourself and you mouth! LOL
    :D I understand ALOT more than I care to let on :D

    i don't think PACE applies in Scotland - Revenue protection for First Great Western use this, but the guys in the same position in Scotland can't due to the differences in law.

    That is a complete lie. In the wireless telgraphy act, it says nothing of the sort. THEY may NEED to hear from you (for their records), although legally there is no recource for them to prosecute on the grounds that you didn't tell them that you didn't have something.

    A 17 year old (now eligable for a driving licence) does not have to inform the DVLA if he doesn't intend to drive.

  • well last feb i moved in to a flat and didnt get a tv licence!!!

    i thought i had one but when we moved found out we didnt...

    moved in with faily in july so didnt need one (they already had one)

    moved into our new home beggining of december and rang up for a lisence was told didnt need one as the property already had one (was able to comfirm with them that this was in landlords name) explained that landlord would prob transfer his what do i do and all she could say was wait for us to send you a letter!

    knowing that landlord has moved in with family i knew he prob doesnt intend to take the licence... so i asked when the lic was due to expire so i could make sure i was covered no data protection (even though she could tell me name on lic) wait for a renewal letter...

    so we havent got a tv licence to our name cos were not allowed one lol :rotfl:
