    I remember the Abbey doing that in the mid nineties, I was off like a shot. Charging for using another banks machines is sure to alienate customers. They would never get away with it especially with their poor service. All things considered I think the charge will not happen.

    Well you may be right, I hope you are - but it's possible other banks are looking for an excuse to do the same thing. Once one has jumped the others may follow.

    Had the banks lost the recent overdraft charges case then we would most certainly be paying for cas withdrawals, on line access even direct debits. I am glad the banks won.

  • Its a personal opinion, but I think the only thing that has stopped the banks reintroducing surcharges on the use of ATMs of other banks is Nationwide. If the Nationwide is persuaded to change its stance, the surcharges would be back like a shot (although the fee would probably be significantly less than the current fees for using non-free ATMs to avoid the sort of outcry that occurred last time the banks tried this, and no doubt the banks would not charge customers with "premium" accounts).

    As ajharris has said, we would probably already be paying ATM surcharges on the use of currently free ATMs if the overdraft case has gone against the banks.
  • I hope they try it.In 95 when they tried it before it was long before MSE and a campaign against them on here with large scale account closures would make my year!
    I have a deep burning indifference

  • Was it not Barclays that were told to get into line by the other banks over account charging. I cannot remember Abbey doing it, but I remember some fuss over Barclays potentially doing an ATM charge, and other banks threatening to 'retaliate' and it was dropped.

    I personally do not believe that we will end up paying for ATM usage. The Abbey did impose a charge for using non Abbey machines during the mid nineties, the fact that they scrapped it strongly indicates that there was a huge backlash from thier customers or why else did they back down?

    Furthermore, gone are the days when people stayed with the same bank all their lives. Nowadays people change if they are not happy and the market place is more competitive than ever. Changing is much easier as the banks do a lot of the leg work.

    There is also that fact that we are in a recession, people struggle to pay their basic bills. The thought of paying to access their own money is not something that would go down well.

    I am delighted with my bank and have no issues with paying for the account, the perks and service make it justifiable. However if they were to start charging for ATM usage that would be the end for me.

    Correct me if I am wrong, if my memory serves my correctly when the banks won the court case over their charges I thought that one of the reasons why the judge ruled in their favour was so as not to threaten free banking.

    It would be interesting to hear from anyone that would tolerate a fee for ATM usage.

  • I am a little puzzled by some of the comments above.

    I am of course with the majority on here that never uses an ATM that charges (they are not that hard to avoid where I live), but my post above was based partly on the facts that:

    - I suspect (I have no evidence, only based on seeing how many friends and family use their cards) that the percentage of people using fee paying ATMs is higher now than it was back in the 90s;

    - its not unusual abroad

    - at the moment banks must be looking at alternative ways to swell their coffers to cover the cuts they made to unauthorised overdraft and related fees.

    If they get enough peple paying monthly fees for their added value accounts, or new entrants are agressive (Tesco, Virgin), we may indeed be spared ATM fees as the majority here believe.
