Tiling on top of tiles!

i have a kitchen with 4 walls completely tiled in 1970s under sized tiles--i have painted over the original yellow but to be honest it looks worse!!-can tiles be applied on top of these ties--the tiling is really well done and as flat as a board --otherwise any other suggestions--i couldnt face removing them as i did in the bathroom because i think they used superglue!!

Tiling over tiles is fine. However, I am not sure that this is appropriate now that you have painted over the original tiles. In my experience paint on tiles, even when using a decent tile primer, never seems to adhere properly. So you may find that the paint is the 'weak link in the chain'. I know it is a pig of a job, but getting the old ones off may be your best long term solution.

Tiling can be tiled over once but after that they'd have to be removed if you wanted to change them.

I would advise you remove, A GOOD tiler will never tile over tile, You do not know how well the exisitng tiles are fixed and you may also have problems with the extra weight, Plastered walls can only take 20kg per sqm

i think the painted tiles are such a mess because i used 'international' undercoat and then stopped because i didnt like the small tiles full stop so its not a real 'slimey' top coat paint--the tiles are adhered like superglue and under them are 1970 solid bricked walls(it seems) and once this layer go on there will be no further need to retile ever again--i will move home!!
i have just thought of my foreign home and wondered if tile on tile could be done in a bathroom setting-
--what is the system --do you just use tile adhesive on top of the tiles ?
is 20kgs per sq metre a lot of weight for tiles--seems a lot enough for 2 layers?

    Ditto the above,
20kg per sqm equats to about an 8mm thick tile,so tiling onto this questionable paint with another layer of tiles is a no no

No you don't just use tile addy on top of existing tiles. I third the motion to take them off completely.

A good tiler would never even suggest tiling over tiles.

Do the job properly, it will look better and will last longer.
ie you wont keep having tiles dropping off because of the paint.
dropped tiles mean cracked toilets, baths basins etc.
Then you really would be cursing.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

i think i will complete the painting because it really is too much to take on at the moment any suggestions on a recommended top coat in white!
Does tiling over floor tiles present the same challenge or is it non gravity connected!
One day small squares will come back in fashion!
İ just noticed someone mentioned tile primer does this go on before the adhesive if tiling over?
