Replacing Car Brakes BY YOURSELF

Hi.
Anyone have adventured to change car brakes themselves?
Checked some videos of how to do it, and can be done, but CAN IT REALLY BE DONE by an unprofessional?
Brakes are an important factor for your and other road users safety.

Anyway... anyone have done it?

Brakes are !!!! easy with the right equipment, common sense and proper instructions/idea of process

They should not be touched by anyone who doesnt have this and isnt confident in doing so.

Spot on, don't touch things like brakes without confidence- more important a car stops than goes. Ask Toyota :p

It is very easy to DIY, but if you have to ask ......... then maybe you need to ask a more knowledgeable friend to help.

    Yes guys.
I agree with you..... Only the idea of saving a few pounds make me think about doing it myself.
But being a unprofessional I only have a 10% guts of doing it.

unless you know where to source the parts for trade price then you may end up saving nothing.

  • If you have the tools and the instructions its a simple job. There's really very little to go wrong, in most cases its two bolts, some sandpaper, and a big screwdriver.

Yes they are easy to do, but it all depends on the make and model of car. Some models need the brake cylinder screwing back in rather than just pushing it back. This needs special tools.

It always amazes me that in Nanny State UK, we cannot change a 13 amp socket in our kitchens without being in breach of some form of regulation, yet any old Tom, !!!!!! or Harriet can mess around with car brakes.:(

Presuming you mean the brake piston, no, special tools aren't required, although they help.
