I quite agree here. I chose to bottle feed my babies because I hated breastfeeding [did try it though] and I used my family allowance [child benefit?] to pay for it ,and other essentials. I think you have to accept that no matter how committed you are to breastfeeding it may
not work out and you my have to buy formula at some stage. It's not a matter of being penalised, it's just a fact of life.

Almost all breastfeeding problems can be solved with the right help, support and information. Some may not want to overcome them, that is fine, but I don't think it is right or fair to perpetuate the myth that it often doesn't work out. Unfortunately this is something we as a society seem to do.

I would be greatly interested in knowing though how large the profit margin is on babyformula...[/QUOTE]

Interesting question unfortunately after a google I can only find reference to the american market where they appear to be making a whopping 40-60% profit on them.

Why does it have to feel like an attack and not a discussion and the sharing of ideas and information? Why does it have to be an emotional thing?

Because it is an emotional thing - imagine if you woke up tomorrow and suddenly Toby refused the breast. Would you not feel emotional?

I am not interested in getting into another BF v FF debate, but I posted about the price of Aptimil on the Parent Thread the other day, as I noticed it had gone up by about 60p in Tesco. However, I checked Boots and they still have it at £7.90 so you should stock up. That's what i've done. I am not sure if other supermarkets have increased the price or if it's just Tesco. Where did you see it?

    I would feel very upset/emotional.

I mean, why does the discussion of formula being sub-optimal, not ideal, not as good as breastmilk, feel like an attack?

Because when you are talking to mothers with babies and the terms deficient, incomplete, and inferior are used then it cant help but get personal it makes them feel like bad mothers. Maybe it wasnt a personal attack from you but the site sure makes you feel like you are being attacked for your choices.

I suppose I see this as more of a society issue, than an individual family issue.

I think it would be good if society could detach emotion from it, and really analyze and discuss this issue. We might make good progress that way. Things aren't really working as they are, I don't think.

I don't think guilt should be felt. Women should sometimes feel angry or letdown, but rarely guilt. Not many think 'I can't be bothered' - usually they aren't given the right support, or are given poor information, or don't have the right knowledge to make an informed choice.

It is very difficult to share breastfeeding information, as offence almost always occurs, so I'm glad that formula can't be promoted even more,

Because the thread was discussing the rise in price of a formula milk, rather than the relative pros and cons of bf vs ff.

People ff for different reasons and it doesn't matter what those reasons are, be it choice or necessity- it is a personal thing and a really emotive issue because everyone has an opinion.
