My annual gas & electric consumption is 14333 and 4245 KWh.

When I apply these EDF rates, 2.721p and 7.97p per KWh (norweb region), you will not believe but the total price works out to be approx. £720 on my consumption????

Currently, I pay EON (on the capped 2006 rates) a total of £920.

This would mean that EDF is cheaper by £200 for me! And the cashback you mention means EDF works out even less at £640???? Surely ....

I can not believe this! I must be doing something wrong - I thought the prices have gone up!!

What are the EON 2006 capped rates for Gas and Electric Tier 1 & 2,
dual fuel & Direct Debit discounts %? Please make sure whether they are including the 5% VAT. Just curious.

For my area, NW London, it would appear to be cheaper on EON FixOnline 5, because gas Tier 2 is cheaper at 2.5383p (after discount and VAT) against your EDF 2.721p. The electricity Tier 2 is 7.97895p, same as your EDF.

The tariffs for different areas are all over the place, so all you can do is to compare on the web sites, and do your research work on the most promising price plans. There's no hurry, since you don't use much in the warmer months. I'm hoping for a price war due to the British Gas price drop, and hope to pick up a 5 year fixed around March. Ofgem is talking about a 25% hike in the next 5 years.

The unit price includes vat. For 2006 cap. rate reading from bill:
    gas: 4.556p threshold 4572kwh then 2.51p
    elec: 17.934p threshold 900kwh, then 9.261p

For 2012 cap (new one offered),
    gas: 6.975p threshold 2680kwh, then 3.642p
    elec: 20.433p threshold 900kwh, then 11.109p

    Doing the maths, I get:
    old EON 2006 : £920
    new EON 2012 : £1166

I actually also paid around £920 last year so figures look ok.

I always paid by credit card so no DD discount. Looking at the bill there is no dual fuel discount either.

    Hope this helps!

Is there any particular reason you are choosing to pay an extra 20% or more for paying with a credit card?

    Thanks,

This is news to me, because I have been managing online for years now, and I have been keeping an eye out for long term fixes, on the EON website http://www.eonenergy.com , but it does not show 2012 cap, and I never saw the 2006 cap.

Fixed price 4 only fixes to 1st December 2010
Energy Saver 9 is capped to 31st December 2010
FixOnline 5 is fixed until 1st March 2011

The 2012 cap for gas of 3.642p looks good relative to the current standard base rate Tier 2 of 3.40725p, which is a premium of 6.9%. So if the gas basic rate goes up by 7%, I will be winning from that point,
IF I was paying standard base rate. Assuming the Ofgem warning of 25% increase is spread across 5 years linearly (5% a year), I will be better off from 2012: unfortunately that is precisely when the 2012 cap ends!

The negative side of switching to the 2012 cap (if it was available in my area at all) is losing the dual fuel discount of 2%, and the online discount of 17.50% in FixOnline 5. I assume the Direct Debit discount of 6% will still apply. So that is a 19.50% difference for year one, and arguably 15% difference for year two, with no capping benefit received in year three, because 2012 cap has expired.

My dream scenario is EON coming up with a 5 year fix based on current low prices in the futures market. I suppose a ten year fix would be asking too much?

    20% gosh!

Nobody from EON ever mentioned this point to me before ... and it's probably my fault as well for not looking around for these past 4 years to see whether my plan was cheap or not. All the media hype about prices going up and letters coming from EON saying that I am capped so don't worry made feel secure and gave me peace of mind!

The next cheapest for me would have been Eon fixoline V5 but at 11% more than EDF I'm grateful still have it in my area!

Have a check on comparison sites to see what the best deal is for your area.
