New to Sky

Hello all
We are thinking about taking the plunge and subscribing to Sky. Anyone know of any decent deals out there? Currently we are BT vision customers, we're finding it's getting expensive with it but wondered if Sky would be better. So I guess we're looking for the ability to be able to pause live tv etc etc.

Thanks for the advice.

Depends on what you're after. If BT Vision is getting expensive, surely paying for Sky isn't the way to go?? Are you looking to pay for subscription channels?

The basic Sky package is now £18/month, rising up to £48/month (if you don't take an HD sub). Box and install price can vary depending on what exactly you subscribe to.

Freeview+ and Freesat+ boxes allow you to record/rewind/pause live TV. Would you consider them?

In my view BT Vision and Sky are not comparable. BT Vison is just a collection of Videos on Demand, Sky has nothing on Demand other than Sky Anytime. Cheapest Sky subscription is around £18 per month if I remember correctly.

You may get some free install or box but it the monthly sub will not change. Sky only seem to offer the Sky+HD box now and not the ordinary Sky+, if you don't want to pay the extra £10 per month for the HD pack you will need to pay £79 setup charges.

If your main priority is PVR facilities (record and pause live TV), then all you need is a Freeview or Freesat PVR, depending on what platform you want to use.
I would recommend the Humax 9300T (Freeview) or the Humax Foxsat HDR (Freesat). These give you all the facilities of Sky+. Additonally, if you go the Freesat route, you will have some HD channels (though Freview HD is now available in some areas).
If you want the subscription channels, then you have to go the Sky route.

  • Please excuse my first post as a question, I've been here some while, but not as a poster :-)

We've been thinking about moving to BT Vision. I've been trying to work out whether BT vision needs BT Broadband to work, their website seems to say it does. But it's possible to put together a 'package' of BT phone calls and BT Vision without their broadband, which does seem odd!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Welcome to the forum worlestone. Better to start your own thread in future than hijack someone else's though.
Yes, BT Vision does require broadband, it is basically an on-demand system, and the on-demand content is supplied via your ADSL connection.

  • I signed up to Sky on Friday for the first time, after cancelling Virgin. I ordered online, got the SKY+HD box with 2 channel packs and the HD subscription for £29 a month. There were no additional costs for the box or installation as I took the HD subscription. You also get £25 M&S vouchers for ordering online, and because I used the Quidco link, there is £65 cashback coming my way for getting SKY+HD with HD subscription (this is showing as tracked on Quidco).

Sky are coming to install it next Saturday, I might not have furniture in my new place, but at least i'll have Jack Bauer in all his HD Glory!

(i'll also be getting Sky phone and broadband once my phone line is connected).
