advice on a new PC

i'm looking to replace my PC with a new one as I' beginning to get a number of porblems with it and I'd rather replace it now than have it fail on me and lose everything. I'm currently running a Dell with an AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core processor 3800+, 2.00GHz, 1.00 GB of Ram.

My problem is that I go to pC world on any other shop and get completely blinded by processors and memory and RAM, and I don't know which is more important for me. Some people tell me hard drive is the most important, others the processing speed and I am completely lost. All I use the PC for is documents, emails, browsing, plus ebay and Amazon etc. I also load photos and then transfer them to a portable harddrive for storage. I do like a PC though that cna cope with lots of open browser windows so I can cut and paste between various auction sites and upload photos quickly.

This is th eone that PC world showed me (although it was much dearer in my store this morning)

Although someone at work told me this one was best:

I don't really need a monitor as I'm happy with the one i have.

What should i be looking for, which bit of the jargon is important to me?

Thank you

It's more than likely just needing formatted then reinstall of windows instead of spending money on new hardware.
  • I'd say the world is your oyster. For your needs then even the cheapest PC available today should surpass them

However, in true moneysaving fashion, why not first make sure that everything you want to keep is backed up, then post a description of the problems you are experiencing. It's quite possible for your existing PC to be restored to its former, reliable state.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

Your current PC is more than capable of handling what you use it for I agree with the above post.

I realise that a few of the software type problems can be sorted but I have a material breakdown in the box itself in that I have a blown something or other in the box which means my USB ports don't work and I have a connection cable rigged up by a PC mechanic (independent not PC World) to use a keyboard and mouse that comes out of a gap in the side of the box. I'm not supposed to jiggle the PC or move it to dust or anything as apparently it is shot to bits inside and beyond economic repair.

I run a small business and having it in and out of the repair every month or so is costing me money, so I'd rather replace now before I lose the lot.

EDIT: My CD burner doesn't always work either as that was also affected when the ports blew.

    Hi
If you're determined to buy a new pc then this one here is adequate for your requirements.
    No monitor.
    Windows 7 with 2GB RAM.
Only 160GB hard drive, but you keep your photos on an external drive anyway.
    It's got a DVD writer.
The price is £239.99. It says free delivery too.
Wait to see what other people suggest before you commit.

Yes, I take everything important off to a removable hard drive.I can't risk losing too much info in one go especially my outside work stuff.

you can always keep the hdd from your old machine, and invest £10 or so in a caddy so you can access it on your new pc when you get it.....it also serves as a second backup to the external hdd you have now :)

But you have already made a backup?
