Fabia or Fiesta

If your budget allows it, get the bigger engine (1.9) diesel Fabia, again the engine is a standard VW Group engine, but it gives you a bit extra power when you need it

All of them are appart from... the 1.4mpi 8v which is based on the old Skoda pushrod engines. It's rather thirsty, gutless, and supposedly prone to headgasket failure. Other than that it is reasonably bullet proof, has a timing chain instead of a cambelt, although it is common for the chain to get noisy after galactic mileages. This engine was retired as it was unable to be modified to meet more strict emissions requirements. (To avoid confusion the 1.4 mpi 16v is a VW engine). If your budget allows it, get the bigger engine (1.9) diesel Fabia, again the engine is a standard VW Group engine, but it gives you a bit extra power when you need it
The 1.2 HTP is also a Skoda designed engine. I don't know much about it but can only assume it was brought out to replace the 1.4mpi after its demise to fill out the bottom of the market segment.0 -
My wife had a 05 plate 1.4tdci zetec Fiesta as a driving school car. Apart from the drivers seat adjuster braking (constant use) it was a great car. Heated front screen was brilliant and servicing was relatively cheap. I took it off her handsafter 18 months with 25,000 miles on it, kept it another 10,000 miles and sold it to a work colleague who is now up to 56,000 miles without a hitch. Don't know about the Fabia but they get good write ups. Go and drive both and see which you prefer.0
