Looking to buy 2nd hand 1.4 diesel 5 door, but can't decide which one, price up to 5k, any helpful hints. And is it best to wait till scrappage has gone(when is that?) .Thanks

  • Scrappage don't apply to secondhand cars so if you get a deal your happy with why wait.

Sorry i wasn't clear, just wondering if the 2nd hand market would change when scrappage ended.
  • Who knows, will the housing market pick up too?

Fabia is better than a Fiesta, I've had both. Fabia was very cheap to keep running parts etc and never let me down unlike the Fiesta age for age. I still have a Fabia and have done since 2002
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

If you were buying new it would be a trickier question as new Fiesta as bigger and more refined than previous models (although rear legroom still not good enough).

Fabia is a tardis of a car (especially in estate version) the 1.4 diesel engine is straight out the VW stable and in terms of handling and performance it feels closer to the Focus than Fiesta.

My vote would also be Fabia - Only downside may be availability and the fact they have very strong residual values so you will pay a premium but it is worth it.

Fabia VRS, even brand new was a bargain.

Fabia is the much better car of the two compared with a Fiesta. Now if you start comparing the Fabia with a Focus there might be something to debate :) !

Look at https://www.briskoda.net forums for ideas of things to look out for. I think the main thing people mention is wet carpets either due to washer pipe popping off or leaking in through the door ancilliaries carrier, both should be relatively easy to sort DIY but are a good thing to point out to haggle down.

a fabia will hold its value better than a fiesta, especially a diesel one.
