From what I can tell of ancestry.co.uk, the main thing I find info from that's available without a premium account is other people's family trees (which can be quite helpful, as you're invariably find people in your family on those trees). You should type in some names and dates and see what comes up for you, I think it shows a listing of results even if you don't have a paid account. You won't be able to click on them, but you'll get an idea of what records are out there for you. With the basic membership, it seems like you just get census records and family trees, you can't access the other items.

If you don't have this software already, though, it's quite worth the cost even if you find little of use on Ancestry as it's a great way to organize and keep track of the information and photos you do have, even if it's just your parents, yourself and children, your spouse/partner's family, and your siblings and their children.

I am only on genesreunited as well so a couple of months ago someone gave me a copy of Family tree maker (v.old one). You can export your tree from genesreunited straight onto FTM but the photos dont transfer. I have kept the tree updated on genesreunited & then tried to update from there to FTM but it then wipes out the photos again so I think you then probably have to keep each tree updated manually in future unless someone can tell me which buttons I should be hitting to stop that happening?
It does look easy to use though with lots of different charts available, but I cant give up on genesreunited just yet as I've had so many hot matches from second cousins, its been invaluable.

I'm torn now between getting the FTM deal through Tesco Clubcard for £15 which gives 'Essentials membership' or just joining ancestry using Premier membership full time....

  • If you use your Tesco Clubcard deal to pay £15 for the FTM 2010 software, it will cost you £65.70 to upgrade to Premium membership from Essentials. Cheaper than paying the Premium membership of £107.

Hi, yes it does, I did that last year. When you cancel you can still access ancestry, you just can't view the files. So when you rejoin all your info is still there. :)
