You can also get Family Tree Maker 2010, with the free subscription, on the Tesco Clubcard rewards page for £15 in vouchers. The vouchers get you more in restaurant deals, but if you're trying not to spend actual cash, it's a good way to go. The software is great, btw.

Was thinking of getting this as only on genesreunited at mo.... what sort of printouts can you do from it?
Mum to 2 lovely boys who keep me busy.

No I dont know how much extra it is. Have to say the premium sub has been wonderful for me, particularly since they added all the London Metropolitan Archive marriages, baptisms and burials - its saved me literally hundreds of quid in not having to buy certificates at £7 a time as you can view the original parish register on line and copy it (London area only) - wonderful.

Thanks for the info about LMA - didn't know they had added these records. Managed to find a record that I had missed when I looked at the fiche years ago.

Unfortunately cannot save images when looking at Ancestry at the library, so I subscription is probably the way to go.

If not, buy the program and keep it til yours runs out and then install it - I did that last year. Oh and go through quidco.com if you do buy a full sub as you get 25% cash back. £20 for 6 months is half what you have paid, but not disastrous.

thx for this op. am looking to get started on finding out from whence my family came (obviously to see if i have rich relatives to go cap in hand to!). it seems you would recommend this one?

also, will topcashback/quidco work with the offer? would be even more of a bargain then.

You can buy a full essential or premium sub through quidco with 25% cash back. TWR isnt on quidco so you couldnt get another 25% off the £19.99 for the FTM2010 and the sub.

Ancestry is the best source for research. You can take a free 14 day trial but only of the essential package which may be enough for a taster for you. Just google ancestry.co.uk

electra, Ive found literally dozens and dozens of baps, marriages and burials on the LMA images, Im thrilled its saved me so much in buying certs and of course I have details Id not spent the £7 per cert to get but which are very very nice to have on siblings details etc. Also found children born and buried between census which Id never had known existed. Its good to just enter the basic details, eg surname only in the search for the parish records and then scan for your people - done very well doing that.

Mazcabs, go to TWR computing site to read up on the facilities each program has. But the 2010 will be fine. I still use the 2006 even though I have the 08 and 09, it just suits me. I also have the ancestry tree now too as its very easy to merge information from other sources on there.

My copy of the program arrived this morning.

    Very fast turnaround.

You can send yourself the record by email & it does send the image link which you can save to your hard drive before it expires.
Looks like the premium membership offers more though so still worth looking at if you've got loads of lookups to do.

You can do a variety of family-tree type graphs, or a variety of written documents explaining relationships. I think you can get it to print as a story, can't remember. You can set it to print with thumbnail pictures or without, with source listings or without, you can have it print all the photos and documents or not, you can have it include your notes that you've added about people or not (like if you put various stories or details of their lives in the "notes" section.) It's a pretty good selection of options.

Damn I only paid £80 odd quid two weeks ago.

I'll see if I can cancel. Thanks.

If you cant cancel, it does say that if you already have a subscription you can add the six months onto the end.

I am only on genesreunited as well so a couple of months ago someone gave me a copy of Family tree maker (v.old one). You can export your tree from genesreunited straight onto FTM but the photos dont transfer. I have kept the tree updated on genesreunited & then tried to update from there to FTM but it then wipes out the photos again so I think you then probably have to keep each tree updated manually in future unless someone can tell me which buttons I should be hitting to stop that happening?
It does look easy to use though with lots of different charts available, but I cant give up on genesreunited just yet as I've had so many hot matches from second cousins, its been invaluable.
