Thanks weezl for the explanation. It makes lots of sense to me.
I love the idea of subsistence living, but I have a DH to take into consideration who isn't as happy to go to that level.
In regards to your '50p a day' thread, I think food can be one area that when people have cut back everywhere else, they don't want to feel they can't have some treats. Does that make sense? For instance, my DH will happily banter the phrase 'poor people's food' around about certain meals or certain ingredients. Some of that is because of his childhood. I'm sure other people can have different reasons, perhaps ethical etc.
anyway, just another thought or two. :)

Yes it really does. It's made me feel quite perked up about the challenge actually! What a frugal meal :).

Thanks for taking part. How old are your children? I'm just trying to get a feel for how they might compare to say Bob and Shirley's mythical ravenous teenagers :rotfl:

    Fascinating!

Frankie could you or anyone else reading give me a list or a few examples of 'poor people's recipes' or 'poor people's ingredients'.

I don't mind if they're part of the meal plans. I won't be offended on behalf of Mr. Chick Pea :)

Do you mean as well that although mythical bob and shirley are poor, they can't say that to themselves yet, or is it about the way the food communicates to others outside the family that they are struggling?

    chutney update:

Well we took out enough for 1 meal for 4 with the sweetcorn fritters and there's still a 2lb jar left :j:j:j.

Obviously it can't turm up at every meal but I was thinking it would go nicely with the delia tart and also with the cauliflower cheese, what do people think?

    xxx

weezl My DH sees JP as a main meal as 'poor people's food' and most other veggie meals except lasagne. Also soup and pudding evening meals. If I can think of any more I'll let you know.
The question about whether 'poor people's food' being from their point of view or how others would see it is any interesting one. My DH had a year of JP and porridge cakes for his evening meal. Every evening. So, I think, for him, it's about meals that remind of that time of his life. I also think that it's about thinking he should be able to eat a certain way because he earns a certain amount.
Whether our mythical family would think the same way...I'm not sure.

I did wonder whether our mythical family has never bought a ready made cake/ cake bar/ quiche/mayonnaise/ egg sarnie tuna mayo baguette whilst out and about etc etc as all of these things will have contained non-FR egg. It does seem a shame to let the challenge fall down simply because we're basically swapping a shop bought cake bar (containing hidden non-FR eggs) for home made carrot cake (also containing non FR egg. Seems to me to miss something I feel. :)

    ?

thank you weezl, that was what I was trying to express! you put it much better!

    by the way...what's JP Frankie?

potty I do agree it's tricky!

    I'm a bit torn!

option one : post feedback on here and someone trawls through: easier for all the recipe testers, major faff for the collater.
option two : post feedback on seperate surveys and someone recieves report: easier for the collater, major faff for the recipe testers.

Shruggy yellow man where are you!?

Yes... I am also very torn
    Shaz's feedback sheet looks good....

If everyone fills out one of those, or similar, for every recipe they test, then updating the spread sheet should be relatively straight forward.

If the feedback sheet, is part of an early post in the thread, so that every one could find it, and "quote" it... it should be easy to find the completed sheets ?

I am not sure if thats still too much of a faff for everyone ...
I need to go to work now...but I will have a wee think on about it
I'll be back in the morning, probably with a melted brain from too much :think:ing :rotfl:

    Hi Weezl and co,

I am a long time lurker of your other threads and am now taking the plunge and posting for the first time (scary beans!!). I think I may be slightly younger than some of you (22) so may be able to give a different opinion on things. I have quizzed my OH on whether he is happy to have things tested on him and he is very excited. He is my age, 6ft 2 and goes to the gym 5 times a week so will possibly be the decider on if your portion control is big enough for strapping lads or not!

Btw I asked his opinion on the meat debate-he feels that a meal is fine as long as it fills him up and is yummy and would be happy to go without meat for long periods of time. Maybe its a generational thing (he also does most of the coking/cleaning-maybe I just have one well trained lol)

Well I just thought I would stick my moneys worth in and hope you all wont think Im too young/inexperienced a cook to join in as I think its a brilliant idea.

Thank you:A. Sounds like it was hard for DH. I really understand why he'd never want to see another JP!

    This is a good point.

One that needs bearing in mind, although I know it will vary from person to person.
