sian Is the Tart the onion tart that is on the plan? Am I right in thinking that it's a bit like sloppy onions on pastry, no egg or filling other than the onions? Is it dry? Sorry for all the questions...I'm not very good at picturing things in my mind.
I think it's going to appear on planner 2 with the scone base, and planner 3 with the balsamic.
Shirley's got the now not very like Delias original one
But you'll get the tarte tatin when you test drive months 2 and 3 for me Frankie:rotfl::A:D
does that help?
Also frankie I can't get the search to work:(, can you recall which day last week we had our stuffing conversation so I can help shanks find ingredients we discussed?:)

ceridwen I have some kiwi fruit...do you think I could use that in the eggless apple cake recipe?
Can anyone else see a theme here...;)
I'm afraid I dont know the answer to that - having not tried an eggless cake recipe of any description - so I have no idea.
It probably very much depends on the recipe as to how much variation is possible - I'm basically inclined to think that one fruit could substitute for another (of similar texture) - but couldnt say on that recipe.
Regarding the kiwicake recipe I have just tried out for instance - I was discussing it with my friend as he wolfed it down. We thought that I could just as easily substitute apple for kiwi (?possibly with having pureed it very slightly first to get the same texture?). We also thought I could substitute some other types of nuts for the walnuts (hazelnuts for instance).
So - I guess the basic clue as to whether one can substitute one ingredient for another in a cake recipe (outside the Plan that is) is whether its similar texture. Regarding the nutrients/calories considerations of the Plan - I dont know whether kiwifruit would substitute for apples per se (hence my earlier comment querying what Bob/Shirley would do to work out suitable substitutes for any recipes they didnt do because they personally disliked them).0 -
1 Roast chicken
1 chicken and onion pie
2 onion tart
2 spanish omelette
3 veggie burgers/rissoles
3 bean curry
3 HM pizza
3 risi e bisi
3 sweetcorn fritters
2 cottage pie
1 chilli
3 pasta alfredo
2 bacon and onion 'suet' pudding
2 tomatoey pasta
would anyone fancy spreading these out over a 31 day month, taking into account relative faffiness weekday/weekend, general variety of tastes, ingredients etc. I can't promise to stick faithfully to it because the nutrition might not allow it, but it would be helpful to have as a great starter

ceridwen Thanks for those comments. As the apple cake is pureed apple then I'm going to give it a go.
weezl This is the link for the stuffing. http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/72613/lemon-and-herb-stuffing
I've not made cordial before. What kind of input were you looking for exactly. I'm certainly happy to search around for recipes and try a few.
Also thanks for the picture...its just how my brain works...its really helpful. I've yet to mention the vegetarian and vegan plan to DH...he may move out for those 2 months
In regards to the eggless cakes. I have found them very easy to use and not being a natural baker the idea that I can use one basic recipe and perhaps substitute ingredients is quite helpful. Shirley may find it so too, as the months go on. The next step of your teaching them how to fish?0 -
ps frankie, sian's versions were based loosely on this from Delia, if that helps you to picture it:
Very loosely
The vegan one looks like the one above and would be nice with a potato salad and a veg, you would get a substantial piece of it and the texture is caramelised, slightly chewy soft onions, crispy base.
It's quite nice, housemate has taken some for lunch; will get her verdict later.
The veggie version, I don't think it would be too nice with potatoes as you have a fairly hefty chunk of scone base (in my loaf tin it is about an 2cm thick and half a loaf tin, about 8cm by 5cm. I think this version would be too much carbohydrate with a potato... Do you think that it would be better to stick to the other tart and make the scones up as a snack? They really are easy and I could try upping the ready brek amount to see how much we can cram in
Onions in beautiful circles are difficult to do without expensive dishes I think, not sure what Shirley could use to make it easier for her, I just thought that if you put some seperate thin slices in the tin at the beginning then you could add the others on top and still get the pattern.
I'd like to experiment on the eggless cake, we still cramming in Ready Brek? Vegan version and veggie version?
Right, must go to work!:AGod is good, all the time

I'm not sure kiwi fruit would work in the cake like the apple did, only because I think of apple as rather gloppy and bind-y to make up for the lack of egg. BUT I could be totally wrong.
weezl, happy to give thoughts on marmalade. Not sure how much help I can be, as I've now made marmalade exactly ONCE in my entire life! I'm off to Uni, now.
I'm sorry I've haven't managed the cookies yet. I'll be doing some baking/cooking this evening so I'll try to get them done then.
I found Frugalised Oat Biscuit recipe. Is that the one you'd like me to use? Are the oats in the recipe readybrek?0 -
I have fun with this all the time - trying to make sure you don't have pasta twice in a row, not too many rice dishes in one stretch, etc.
Using, for example (;)) April's dates:

Fri 2 onion tart
Sat 3 HM pizza
Sun 4 Bacon & onion pudding
Mon 5 risi e bisi
Tues 6 sweetcorn fritters
Weds 7 pasta alfredo
Thurs 8 spanish omelette
Fri 9 veggie burgers
Sat 10 cottage pie
Sun 11 roast chicken
Mon 12 tomatoey pasta
Tues 13 chicken and onion pie
Weds 14 onion tart
Thurs 15 bean curry
Fri 16 sweetcorn fritters
Sat 17 HM pizza
Sun 18 chili
Mon 19 veggie burgers
Tues 20 pasta alfredo
Weds 21 risi e bisi

great! Well it's two thoughts really: firstly, how well do you feel the marmalade would work with all the left overs from the orange parts used in the carrot cake (original version, plus a few more untouched ones?
And second, I think you were saying loads earlier on in the thread something important which has stuck with me.
My understanding as I've built the planner is that when we've baked or cooked with fruits and vegetables for the planner, I am still very much including them as part of bob and shirley's 5 a day. Most cooking methods preserve nutrient content fairly well unless you throw away the liquid in which they are cooked, I think, but need to do a bit more research
Anyhoo, I remembered that you'd said about not feeling comfortable about counting marmalade. Please can you say a bit more about that?
I think you put a winky smiley, so maybe you were teasing, or perhaps it is something that people on here do feel, and I'd not want to ignore that!
Does my question make sense? xxxI'm off to Uni, now.
