OK c, i understand, but stone ground flour contains stone, another non food item.

I'm not knocking your point C, and I respect your view. I think I'm just saying that all flour will have some form of non food item in it. Just as no mater how well we wash our carrots they'll always have earth in them and no matter how well we wash our hands before eating my piece of toast will inevitably have dead skin cells on it.

I'm only saying this cos it feels like the kind of view that if you extrapolate it further could end up costing you loads of money and time but for no real benefit. Which isn't what I want for my friends:(

It's a bit like you telling me to get to bed last night, I say it cos I care :)

Years ago I read a few of adele davis books on nutrition and although some of what she said is disputed she was right on a lot of things. First she said there is no substitute good enough for real wholefoods. Also she said in one of her earliest books that although she could not prove it then she was sure it would be found that margarine was bad for you. It took probably 30+ years but we now know trans fats are bad.
I personally feel we should all eat natural "proper" food as much as possible but with moderation in all things.
I bought a pressure canner from America so I could put food by and know exactly what was in it.
I have been pleasantly suprised at how close to fresh cooked the taste and texture of food is and there are no nasties including salt. Anyone who wants salt in our house has to put it on their food themselves I use a minimum in just a few foods that I cook and never add it to veg.

It's worth bearing in mind Bob and Shirley probably weren't eating a home-made/whole-foods diet anyway so even if this is not considered by everyone to be an "ideal" diet, it is still probably significantly better than what they had (and presumably the health impact of getting rid of the debt will be more significant than the health impact of a whole foods diet).

I agree that they need to eat differently for a time but more education needs to be done across the board on nutrition. I feel strongly that not enough is done and a lot of what filters through is wrong information. Health visitors I have had seem to have less knowledge now than the ones I had years ago. I have a 25 year span of children. It could be that as peoples finances get a little better they could start adding foods to their diet that are better for them .I am not sure if this is coming across right. It is not my intention to argue. My own experiences of being shirly are what drive me.
  • Sadly most Parmesan and grana is not vegetarian as they are made with animal rennet, at least they are where my father comes from. There may be vege versions but I expect they come with a price tag. When my mother first came to the UK in the 50's she would dry cheddar cheese as Parmesan was very hard to get outside of London. So, as my contribution to this project, since I cannot test many recipes, I will experiment to see if I can concoct a tasty, veggie, frugal. alternative.

Re the Marrowfat pea curry - I do recall it was made with tinned peas to which I added what I now know is a Tarka - fried onion, garlic, ginger and curry spices of your choice. I guess it was my first Dal before I new what a Dal was.

You could also turn the Risi e Bisi into a pilau by adding spices and sultanas/nuts, whatever you have lurking in the fridge.

thank you, that would be a lovely contribution :)

Drying cheddar to make parmesan! Wow:T:T:T did she add extra salt do you know?

So just to recap, on the health/wholefoods issues this isn't people saying do a 4th planner for people who don't want any processed foods at all (since this was a 1 in 500 picked option in the polls as a non-negotiable) but people are sharing that when not in dire straights another planner for shirley bought from a healthfood shop with some supermarket goods might be an interesting extra project?

I'm just wanting to check that people are still wanting me to run with the original first three planners first?

    [spanish omelette :)

Can anyone spare 4 medium eggs to test this one out? it would feed 4.

You'll also need potatoes, onion, peas, seasonings and some grana padano, but we could test it by just sprinkling a little mature cheddar on the top for the same effect.]

Just thinking about this for tea tonight - what sort of amounts are we looking at for each considering the stock levels? Is anything to be done as a side?

When we have this (I normally substitute peas for something else such as cabbage/chard as I have a fussy Mr YG who doesn't like peas  honestly, he is fussier than the children :rotfl:), I often reduce or omit the potatoes from the spanish omlette and then do the potatoes as wedges. Just the SO on it's own would not be deemed filling... So can I suggest that I use a small amount of potato in the SO but the rest on the side? Possibly increase the onion in the SO?

From what I have read of peoples thoughts etc in this thread.. I would go with the original planners first - the basics and then adjustments can be made for other ways of eating later...

    Fab :)

If you could test it with the croatian potato salad instead of wedges that would be even more ideal, but please do what is right for your family YG!

amounts wise, I am assuming there's 250g each of potato available for the family of 4.

I can spare 207g of sweetcorn (sorry it's so precise!) onion you can be pretty haphazard with and an upper limit of 60g strong cheddar would be most helpful.

Is there another quantity I've missed there, detail is not my strong suit! :)x
