I've uploaded photos of bob's pate now if anyone was unsure what texture we were aiming at
Lesley, do you think we need to keep the ash content in the foods in the spreadsheet?
*weezls didn't know ash was an essential nutrient, but them folks at the USDA aren't usually wrong*

thanks. I have been crying a lot.
I read the comment on the subsistence kit thread about this all being designed by middle class people for 'the poor' and that it was a case of 'let them eat cake'.
And that comparison for me with a 17 yr old french aristocrat who naively looked out of her window and asked why the people were in revolution, and was told 'they have no bread' and glibly responded with 'but let them eat cake!'. Well it just all felt so embarrassing and heartbreaking.
Perhaps that is how I seem.
But I think things through very hard and I read through everything I say and I really try to be evidence-based.
I accept that it really is tiredness and pregnancy and silliness, I know that in my head. But I am really stung by those words, even though I know that poster didn't mean to offend me, just that the whole idea of this challenge seems absurd to him.
Well there you go, that's my explanation about why I'm all downcast
Thanks for being supportive.

The poster you mention is a lady in her 40's who has Aspergers and I know you are right in assuming she meant no offence. In fact, her comments were to ceridwen not you. They were about the kit list and not the plan.
She supports herself through self employment (web design I think) and up until recently lived in a one roomed studio with small fridge and ice box, microwave and hot plate and no room for any other cooking kit. She is inventive in her cooking and fed herself very cheaply.
I think her rather badly expressed point was that if one has ones back against the wall, cooking kit is an unneccesary expense and lateral thinking and improvisation goes a long way to eliminate the need for many things on the list.
Please don't lose heart and doubt yourself.Murphy was an optimist!!!0 -
spanish omelette
Can anyone spare 4 medium eggs to test this one out? it would feed 4.
You'll also need potatoes, onion, peas, seasonings and some grana padano, but we could test it by just sprinkling a little mature cheddar on the top for the same effect.
I would test this out but I forbade myself to eat eggs after 36 weeks pregnancy

I'm sorry I took that the wrong way. Thank you for telling me.:A
I know no-one intended to hurt me my sensitivity got a little out of hand.:o
Penny penguin also posted a very encouraging message about our challenge too, which I was very glad of.
Thanks all for your supportI really am amazed that a bunch of strangers are willing to unite to do something like this

The additional skill I'm really needing at the moment is probably quite a quiet behind the scenes sort of task.:o I have a fabulous spreadsheet designed by lesley following my dodgy initial attempts :rotfl:, which needs quite a bit of info putting in it still and checking with the latest versions of the recipes. Calories added etc.
If anyone feels they can give a bit of time to that it would be great. Lesley and I were joking the other night that I am not really a completer-finisher and I'd hate the project to fizzle because I can't dot the 'i's and cross the 't's of the project
Putting in the recipes might be something we could share, if people are ok with the spreadsheet.
A person could put in 1 or 2 recipes, then someone else could do another couple. Wouldn't be too onerous then
Don't know what people think, but could be easiest downloading the spreadsheet, adding the recipe and uploading it back to Googledocs.
I could write a step by step if that helps
Or maybe ok to use in Googledocs direct?0 -

I just copied in a few of the nutrients shown in recipecal to show what it could look like. We can use as few or as many as you like. Which things are you tracking?
cals, protein, fats, Omegas, zinc anything else?0 -

ah right! I thought you knew something about the importance of ash in our daily diet that I'd completely missed :rotfl:
Taka mentioned the possible lack of b12 in planner 3, and I think we need to be careful about niacin in that one because we're cooking with cornmeal in that one a bit
TBH I'm not sure how far to go down the nutrient evaluation.
2 reasons: by the time we do it well asda will have discontinued half the list and it'll be 2013 :rotfl:
most people seem to be saying to me to keep it simple. I think therefore we'll look at the ones you mentioned, and ask people like taka, ceridwen, GISI, allegra's dd and murrell to give planners 2 and 3 the once over, since they have lived as healthy veggie and vegans and done lots of research. How does that sound?

would anyone be prepared to risk a half batch of frugalised twinks hobnobs made with hot oat cereal rather than whole oats?

Glad you're back on the 'up' weezl I've already got dinner cooking and have my meals planned for the next couple of days, but I can give the Spanish Omlette a go on Monday evening, if that's not too late.
Unfortunately, I don't have anything other than porridge oats, though I could pick some ready oats up on Saturday and give the hobnobs a go then??
Sorry I can't be more help.0 -
I am willing Weezl, since I have a box of hot oats sat in the kitchen and H is too young to eat it yet!
You are missed on the Parenting Thread, btw! We want to know how you, Fergie and Kester are doing!:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator0
