also, you'll probably find this statement made on Asda's policy pages reassuring:
"Genetically modified food: All our food ingredients are from non GM sources
Our definition of non-GM is something which has been produced under strictly monitored guidelines, applied at every stage – from the field to the finished product to ensure that the risk of inadvertent contamination is minimised.
We’re open to GM technologies, but the benefits to the end consumer need to be clearly demonstrated in terms of, for instance, food security, better use of land, improvements in health, or lowering the cost of living."

no need C, the asda vegetable oil is non-GM. You can check this by looking at the PLU code, which will begin with the digit 8 if it is GM.
Hope that helps
Guess that means we advise people going to other supermarkets for their food the way to check out whether their vegetable oil is okay?0 -
Yep - I know that - but - doesnt other oil also provide a similar amount of this?
only flaxseed or hemp oils at approx 30 times the price. SorryAs it's not GM, do you mind me asking your thoughts about wanting to replace it?
I'm just concerned Bob and Shirley will have the same objections and I don't want to get it wrong for them

As long as its not GM - and as far as we can see there couldnt have been any contamination of it by GM crops nearby - then we'd be okay on that.
Perhaps we need to check out other supermarkets as to whether their rapeseed oil is GM or no? (Thinks...that G.M. rapeseed is getting used (aka forced down our unwilling throats) somewhere or other - perhaps in readymeals?).
(errr...getting slightly confused here between rapeseed oil and vegetable oil - does this mean that rapeseed oil is one of several constituent oils in "vegetable oil"?)0 -
Mr Weezl's verdict on apple cereal bars:
- a very natural apply flavour, not too sweet. Nice balance of raisin to apple.
- consistency and mouth feel, feels chewy like a cereal bar, quite solid rather than flaky like a cake-yum
- overall out of 10? 8
- would you have it again- yes definately.
- Would go up to a 9 with cinnamon or garam masala
- A good mid morning snack

Hi Weezl I have been trying to keep up with this thread... Working from first page I'm now at page 32 but I keep reading the last page too - not quite as bad as reading the end of a book before the whole book I hope!
I am really into the whole concept of your idea and am modifying to our needs i.e. lots of meat and milk but it has really helped me focus on the amount we spend.
I have tried the carrot cake DD and I made last night and I think chocolate biscuits will now be a thing of the past:T
I followed the link off the first page but reduced the sugar to 200g and the oil to 300ml. It worked fine looks and tastes wonderful - still feels a little greasy when you hold it but a small price to pay.
One of the meals I do on not much money weeks is the corned beef quiche thing. Squashed corned beef and onion for the base and cottage cheese and egg for the filling - really tasty.
I like the way that everyone is debating the health issues of oil etc but do think that these issues would go totally over the head of B&S if they had been used to eating processed foods with excessive salt and preservatives are they really going to be bothered about vitamins, omega 3, etc? I do however think you are right in giving them the healthiest diet possible though.
I look forwar to page 33 onwards:beer:

indeed Keggie! I never knew that the debate would get so technical or tricky :rotfl:
Look forward to hearing more of your thoughts as you read further

Avocet will be able to say if waitrose/ocado is the same at some point
