  • Just popping in to say that I've just polished off the last slice of carrot cake. It was made last Thursday but was still delicious and moist today. Had been kept wrapped in foil in a cake tin and I couldn't quite believe how fresh it still was :T

Will definitely make it again but now have 11 of Weezls equally delicious oaty cereal bars to eat :D Although, OH has already been sniffing around the tin so they might not last too long..
Money paid out from Topcashback so far= £105.89 :j

Hugely unlikely m'dear! In any contest between weezl and avocet for being good at checking essential details, my money is on Avocet any day of the week ;)

Hmmm. I thought you held a firmer grip on your pennies than that :-)

By the way, going back to the subject of snacks, I think the toast and apple curd snack option on the current menu plan is an excellent choice for teenagers. One of mine is eating exactly that at the moment. (I won't spoil the moment by adding that I would prefer the toast to be half-wholemeal, or with some rye or seeds, though!)

WEETABIX LOAF SUGAR SAVINGS ... using 125g of sugar per loaf would save a total of 130g of sugar per month, enough to make a whole other weetabix loaf.
Just remembered that I meant to mention that this 125g is the amount I have used in the most recent stock analysis.

  • Ooh, we seem to have an agreement of sorts, let me paraphrase and see if people agree..

£100 plan to comply with all essential health requirements- plan as it will stand soon...
£120 plan to be created later to add in extras for us fussy carnivores/chicken lovers/fresh fruit afficionados...

Like what you said at the beginning Weezl, with your 3 families. Only difference is now I think our Bob and Shirley may not be our original Bob and Shirley. They appear, in our collective heads, to need a little more than the basics to feel comfortable with the plan. I think the £100 plan with very little meat is more likely to be useful for another couple, yet to have a name in my head, who value the nutritional values of the plan more highly than getting a nice sausage every now and again. To be honest, maybe they are AM and Weezl, educated, passionate about doing the best they can for as little as possible, willing to try new things (pig head anyone?) all in the cause of reducing debt and living a free-r life.

I might be wrong but I still see Bob as a meat and 2 veg kind of a guy who will try a lentil or two, perhaps even a pilchard but would want to look forward to a meaty dinner, even if only once every two weeks, to make him feel more manly. Not sure what the deal is with some blokes, it is as though they have to prove their manliness with steak, preferably only just dead, similar to the whole male BBQ thing :)

Hope that all makes sense and isn't too much nonsense rambling!

    1 oz butter or spread
    1 oz flour
about a pint of hot stock
2-3oz of whatever hard cheese you have, grated. If using parmesan or gran padano less cheese is needed.
1 heaped tsp of grey mustard or mustard powder for Shirl.

Make a roux with the butter and flour. Add the hot stock in about 4 goes. Between each addition of stock stir the mixture until all the liquid incorporates into the flour and butter. (If you lift the pan off the heat and beat hard with a wooden spoon after the liquid is incorporated your sauce will be beautifully glossy). By the time all the liquid is added you should have a sauce which will coat the back of a spoon. If not add more water or stock. Stir in the mustard and most of the cheese. Leave a spoonful of cheese for the top.

Fry some bacon bits, chopped bacon or ham from ham joint. Add cooked bacon to the sauce and season sauce with pepper and salt.

Stir sauce into shed load of cooked pasta (I use most of a 500g bag but I am a piggy).

Put saucy pasta in baking dish. Top with remaining cheese. Shove in oven at 180 until there are nice brown crunchy bits on the top.

    Stuff face. :)

If Shirl has them available she could add mushrooms or some peas or diced cooked potato to the dish. To enrich for calcium purposes she could add a splash of milk or some milk powder to the sauce.

This is just as nice without the bacon even my fuss-a*se dp enjoys it.
