Any chance of adding the pilchards to a lunch e.g. a little in the calzone pizza and a little in a hummus or spread? So it isn't so much of a big deal? I think beans on toast with pilchards sounds like a good tea :)

Weezl, I hope you are looking after yourself, you are working so hard on here and then have a job, a husband, a baby, a (presumably) big bump... Very impressive but think you need to have some time to relax too, no-one will mind if this thread slows down, we'll all still be in here talking nonsense and sharing recipes and ideas, no rush eh?

    Hello to everyone else :)

great minds thinking alike about the lunches sian :)

See new omega containing meal planner here on google docs

Re taking care of myself, I will try sian :) I'm not great at it.... I think while my body is all encumbered, my brain goes a bit ballistic and tries to compensate. Plus I really want to do something to contribute in case my capacity really changes :o

Are you still up for looking at tweaks to that delia pork and apple recipe you posted?

Also how are your chutney thoughts progressing, no pressure though if you've had to turn your attention to other things :)

    Hi everyone,
I'm dealing with children and Uni this week so not been on so much but I have been trying to keep up with the thread. I've been loving the sound of all the recipes.
I'm going to have a go at some next week.

Thanks everyone for all your hard work.

oh weezle I was wondering if your Chocolate Concrete freezes?

Definitely up for helping with both. Did you want it trying with sausage meat removed from the asda smartprice sausages? It wasn't me that actually tried it, just suggested the idea, but I have made a meal before with chopped sausages and I added chopped apple to the sauce as we had run out of veggies!

Chutney wise can I admit I am a little confused about what things are free to use. From a personal perspective I don't really like the raisins in the one I made before but the cabbage, onion and apple all taste yummy and I have been having it with salad this week at work, seems to work with lots of things and is a lovely colour. Am happy to get more cabbage etc and try again, this time measuring more carefully! Or with beetroot? Or anything else you tell me :) My housemate makes the most delicious pizza, not much cheese but pesto and other random things on it (we had dollops of marscapone the other day) but one of the things I love is when it has chutney dollops on, mmmm.....

You're fabulous for doing this and we'll have you as a special guest on the One Show or This Morning soon enough (though you may have to wear a disguise if you want to remain fairly anonymous!)

    Hi Weezl,

I'm back, and I'll try to get the stock control thing up to date over the next day or two. So that I don't get it all hideously wrong, could you please confirm the following assumptions:

    (1) The shopping list to be used is the one shown in post 1148.

    (2) All the recipes to be included are linked from post 2.

    (3) All the recipes linked from post 2 are to the current versions of the recipes, and already incorporate any tweaks resulting from feedback (such as reducing the oil or cheese).

    Thank you!

  • Another super source of omega 3 is kippers. Kippers contain more omega 3 than most other fish at 3.89g per 150g.

Kippers can be made into a pate for lunch, added to corn chowder soup, or simply eaten as they are.

Asda kippers are good value, high protein boil in bag fillets 200g 78p 3.9/kg

a comparison chart of omega 3 in various fish is at http://www.healthspan.co.uk/articles/_a3861753.aspx
  • I like the kipper idea, super cheap!

I am still catching up with the thread but am nearly there, 50 odd pages is quite a lot of reading! :p:eek:

I was just thinking about a couple of things. Your carrot cake looks delish, but I also make one (not sure how it compares!:o) without eggs, which may make it cheaper? However, I am not sure if you are using these as a protein boost/because you have already budgeted for a certain size pack of eggs for other meals etc.

Also, on the thought of a roast once a week, I sometimes fry some streaky bacon, add some onions and cover in gravy for bacony-oniony-gravy dinner in place of a roast, which is very cheap, and obviously bacon off-cuts could be used. I have it with mash or roast potatoes and veg. It can be a bit salty but very tasty and a bit of a treat!

Thank you and others...I do worry bout our weezl who has indeed a bump and a Ferg (whose bottom shuffling speed has increased but is still exceptionally cute and clearly brainy!!), plus a job, an oh (who is lovely...) and a mad idea about the diet of some bloke called Bob and his wife shirl who we are all getting fond of :rotfl::rotfl:!

Re fish I have anchovies on pizza which is yummy so maybe thats an option?

Having said that....Weezl can I be your agent!!!!! :D

Hey! Welcome back :) hope you had a nice time. I enjoyed that programme about mung beans you recommended :)

I will just check out that all my linkies are up to date as you suggested. As you've probably seen, we may now be trying to accomodate an extra £4 of fish, so things may still be mid-tweak :o:)
But I'll post as soon as I can say a hearty 'Yes!' to your assumptions

Hi sian, good clarification! I'd been wondering if by adding 'padding ingredients' like HM breadcrumbs and an egg and ummmm stuff, we could use some of this, but eek it out pretty far:

I'm not sure if I'm basing it on good maths but will check! When are you shopping next?

chutney wise we still need honing down of the one which was half tomato half onion which Lesley tried, and we felt it was too oniony especially with onion bhajis!

An onion marmalade using 320g onions would be fab if you could look at that :)

erm, more chutney and condiments requests to follow methinks.....

the one show :rotfl:only if Adrian Chiles gave me a backstage pass to the last in the series of the apprentice-you're fired.

    Everyone has their price ;)

firefox - thank you for all the nutrional guidance. I've always thought my family has a healthy diet but I confess i've never deeply considered the colours we eat or the omega 3 / 6 content...but now I'm obsessed - cue lots of beetroot/blackberries appearing as we weren't eating much purple.

glad to know Pure spread is good for the omegas as DD2 eats that. I'll be saving some of the sardine recipes as my daughters have suddenly discovered they love tinned sardines.

I've found it useful too as it's been a while since I have done nutritional maths, I usually do the whole 'healthy swaps' and 'low glycaemic index' thing with clients. I do occasionally advise vegetarians but I clearly haven't fully appreciated the implications of how much vegetable matter is required to get enough omega-3. I'm really enjoying the fact that Weezl is disproving the claim that a healthy diet is expensive! :T

firefox, I'm just trying to rejig the planner to accomodate the fish but keep shirley's cooking less onerous in the week, keep a roast on sunday etc etc and sometimes the twice a weekness of the oily fish is quite close together, ie both tuesday and weds. Is that a problem do you think?

    xxx

Maybe Bob and Shirley adhere to the tradition of fish on a Friday? :p Either two evening meals or an evening meal and a lunch, whatever suits the rest of the plan. I live alone and eat the same thing four days in a row, but I appreciate I am rather [STRIKE]eccentric[/STRIKE] unique in many ways. :o Maybe some of your army who have families can help if you post the provisional version?

I have been pondering since I posted last night that the recipes are too fish-and-tomatoey. I wonder if we can drain the tomato sauce off three cans and use the meat alone, perhaps with a white sauce to dilute the flavour a bit or as fishcakes. Then use the reserved tomato sauce in another dish (?pizza/ puttanesca), it's full of flavour as well as essential fats! The other three tins to be used in tomato based dishes such as the ones I have already posted?
