My current 12mth contract for 512k broadband access with ntl (£17.99 per month
)ends next month on the 19th so I'm looking to change providers. There seem to be some pretty cheap deals for 8mb broadband so I put my number in on the bt website to see what speeds were available. The following message is what I got, now what is the difference between adsl and adsl max? How do I tell which one I have?
"Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 6.5Mbps up to 8Mbps.
The actual ADSL Max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set.
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.
Thank you for your interest."

If you're with NTL, you probably have neither. You're far more likely to have a cable modem, which uses the cable TV network rather than the phone line. Having said that, I believe NTL do have some ADSL customers, and provide a wholesale ADSL service to other ISPs.Jarlawuk wrote:My current 12mth contract for 512k broadband access with ntl (£17.99 per month

If you have 512k ADSL and it hasn't been upgraded, it won't be ADSL max.0 -
From the figures you give you can either get 2MB on an ADSL service or around 6.5MB on max , it depends on you and which one you decided to go with.0

whats the max service? to clarify things and avoid confusion I am on ntl through a bt line as I don't have ntl or telewest where I live

ADSL = upto 2 MB , ADSL Max = upto 8 MB.0
-
max will let your line have the fastest speed possible on your line, so in your case 6.5mb instead of 8mb0
