That's because the boot order in the BIOS in wrong. As soon as you turn the laptop on, it will ask to press DEL, F2 or some other key, to enter system setup - press this as soon as you see the message, then change the order so the CD-ROM is first in order, and the harddrive second.
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.

Just read the manual for your laptop (link), and you need to press F2 when the VAIO logo appears when you turn the laptop on.

Also see page 36 of the Troubleshooting and Recovery Guide (link).

Its repeat press F2. Internal optical drive (CD-ROM ) is first in order, and the harddrive second.
    Thanks

right sorry fell alseep has been along day.
1.right put the laptop hardrive back in the laptop
    2. put in the windows disc into the laptop now restart the machine and disc will boot up as long as you are sure it is in first boot order it will load up windows screen where it will give you the option to format the harddrive, perform a full format and not a quick one this will wipe all the rubbish off the disc and anything else that may have been buried.
3.you need to do then do a fresh install. go thru the on screen instructions and install the fresh copy of windows.

one thing worth doing is making sure you get all the vaio drivers etc before hand either shove them on a usb stick or cd as when windows back in you may need to update your drivers for your model.

Well, its not that funny but... the message I am getting now is (I've not formatted the HDD):-
    Edit Windows Boot Options for:
    VAIO Recovery Enviorment
    Path:\windows\system32\boot\winload.exe

    [/DETECTHAL/MININT/REDIRECT RDIMAGEOFFSET=8192 RDIMAGELENGTH=3161088 RDPATH=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\sources\boot.wim

    ]
Definitely, there is something MISSING after boot.wim till 'end Square bracket'.
When press Enter to continue, it tries to load VAIO recovery but 'cannot found Recovery Disk or Recovery Paritition'
    Pressing OK switches machine off.

PS. thanks Basil for trying hard to help me out. Its greatly appreciated.
shove them on a usb stick.
I've shove them on PC. Maximum USB stick I've is 4gb

I'd like to add before you actually start any work make sure you've got a backup of your data, because if you run the recovery you're going to lose any work stored on the PC

I'd suggest downloading a boot CD (I used Hiren, you can run from USB if needed) and booting "mini windows xp" and taking a backup copy of all your data first for safe keeping

Then then run a disk check on your hard drive with Seagate Seatools and also memtest86 for your memory. What happens if you leave the laptop screen on the recovery bit for about 5-10 mins, anything happen. Is the hard drive light going crazy ?

It's possible to download a Recovery DVD, providing someone is willing to upload it for you. I don't think it falls under any legality issues as it's only the OEM media provided by Sony themselves

Where do I need to put request for this upload? TPB has one but is for other model.
Sony is asking £40 for DVDs

You may have some luck with this site, seems pretty popular. Haven't tried it personally

    http://www.user-guides.co.uk/download/vaio/vaiovgn/vaio-vgn-nr11s-recovery-dvd.html

I've always considered uploading some recovery CD's to my rapidshare account for different models. Support is always good if it's free. I'd rather have a downloadable one than pay £40 to a firm just to send one from stocks which should be included by default

EDIT - Looks like they have their own custom boot cd builder now. I'm looking into it

You can put the software on a bootable USB pen with Hiren Boot CD included. Run the software then burn your own recovery DVD. If it works I'll make one for myself I think :)

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ21Z. You should be able to get your PC back up and running by going to the Vaio Recovery Utility. Type into SEARCH at the bottom left-hand corner.

You don't need the recovery discs, just follow the instructions, and it will load back to factory settings.

Just a warning if you decide to buy Windows 7 OS. I did this and unable to use Fn keys or Volume switch, Sony support very unhelpful for laptops which are not brand new. They say to use Vista drivers, but don't state which ones.

    Good luck
