I have no recovery cds for vaio and its crashed.
Would it be of any use if I format the HDD and load Windows from scratch......
I am totally illitrate with Computers....

well a new install always a good idea but do it from a disc if i where you rather than these recovery partitions and if you have the windows disc do a full format to make sure you sort hard drive out first.0

How exactly has it "crashed" are you getting a blue screen ?

i would switch to windows 7 if i where you at it you wont reget it and dont have all the hassles of vista0

yes, it detects......
But F10 recovery fails to see the recovery partition.

maybe its there but sounds to me like it could be corrupted thats problem you have relying on something like that rather than a disc.
i would reinstall with a full format by disc. and my advice still stands i would dump vista and go windows 7 route is alot better and more reliable and less resource intensive you would see an improvement in its working.0 -
should I hook it to Pc, format and load OS to my pc
or
format, put hdd back to vaio and load OS cd in laptop?

no do it in the laptop as it will detect all the hardware as it all sets up then soon as done all that the old crap of windows update then antivirus then spyware then graphics driver updates etc etc0
