Renault Laguna advice

Hi there
Sorry if im posting in the wrong section.
I am seeking advice from fellows moneysavers about the Renault Laguna 2( 2001 onwards).
I have just passed my driving test and looking for a decent car. On having a look on autotrader.co.uk ive noticed that the Renault Lagunas are not so bad according to for their year and mileage.( Can get a 2002-2003 petrol engined with 60-70k miles on it for about £1300-£1800) Insurance groups are low as well..starting from 7( I do have 4 years foreign no claims which is why i will be getting a lower insurance premium)
Now these prices make it sound like the car is a bargain.. i want to know if there are any serious issues with the Laguna hence dealers are just selling them at cheap prices, or is it just because of the resale values. I wanted to go for a honda 96-97 1.4 but thats costing me about 700 pounds for a decent one with about 100k miles on it..
I am willing to spend that extra £500 for the peace of mind that the car would be relatively new and less chances of breaking down in nowhere. any alternative options wud be appreciated too.
P.S i dont want a small car like a fiesta, micra etc. Just dont like them:A

If it is any help, my dad had a Renault Laguna 2.0 RXE (think it was S reg), when he traded it in last year, it'd done 130,000 with absolutely no major problems at all.0

The Renaults are relatively cheap for a reason, they are not the most reliable of cars.
I would buy the Honda.0 -

I purchased a 2006 Laguna Estate about 6 months a go due to quickly realising I had no way of transporting the new baby and its 10ton of equipment.
I thought, as you do, they looked great value, however its simply the worst car I've ever driven. Ever.
The under steer, lack of feel, wallowy ride just isnt pleasant, Its as if your sitting 10foot from the front wheels, 21mpg out of the 2.0l was an unpleaset surprise as well.
l admit I have come from German sports cars but I dont believe new cars should handle this poorly, try before you buy, especially compared to Audis, Focus's etc..
and read Honestjohns website
And if you are still in the market I know of a good 2006 estate going...0 -
My nephew has just sold his 2003 Laguna Dymanique Techno Tourer (turbo diesel) for £1400. The worst car he has ever owned and he has lost a fortune in what he paid for it.
It may look smart for an estate but the diesel engine was the loudest I've ever heard in passenger vehicle.
I would definitely go for the Honda.

MK1 Laguna's were ok (1994- 2000).
The MK2 was just dire!
Avoid, avoid, avoid...
Try finding a MK1 2.0RTi with the 2.0 16V Volvo engine.0 -

I thought it was Volvo that had a Renault engine.

I currently have the MkII laguna tourer, 2L.
Without a doubt, the worst, and most unreliable car, I've ever had.
The electrics are forever failing, and everything on it is electric or automatic. Currently have a problem just now where brand new batteries are being completely discharged to the point where they are only good for paper weights. Eletrical engineer just sucks air through his teeth when I bring the car in, apparently renaults are known for this!!0 -

I remember my sister buying a Volvo V40 (many moons ago) and a mechanic friend of ours told us to make sure it had the mitsubishi engine and not the renault. He used to work at our local Volvo main agents before starting his own business. He told us how to spot the difference (but I've forgotten now) but I suppose they have all new engines in Volvo's now (I hope).
