Has anybody or could anybody work out how much a license plus the top package on Sky costs per year or per week ?

The TV licence is £145.50 per year. The top package on Sky (HD with all packs including the extra sports channels) is £82 per month, or £984 per year. This is only for a single box, add another £20 per month per box if you want their multiroom package. Assuming single room only, total cost is £1129.50 or £21.72 per week.

I do have a TV, but only for DVDs and iPlayer. Our building doesn't have an aerial so can't get any Freeview, and I'm not interested in enough shows to make paying for just the entertainment packs on Sky (still £8.33 per week including the licence, or £10.64 with HD) worthwhile.

No television here. I don't care for the commercial channels - programmes, however good, are destroyed for me by ad breaks every ten to fifteen minutes. That leaves BBC which amounts to three channels (not counting BBC 3 which is utterly horrible). I am lucky to find one programme a night I want to see and can do that the next day on iPlayer. So - I save £150 per year on the licence fee. I do listen to Radio 4 most of the day - only turn off when The Archers is on!

I love Radio 3 keeps me sane in the morning trafic jams. Lovely and peaceful station. Now if you had said Radio 1.........

No - I was referring to BBC 3 television! I do listen to Radio 3 as well as 4.;)
  • Another no TV person here. Not had a tv for about 10 years. Another radio 4 fan here too.

How shocking. I might have to go and have a lie down now as I feel a bit wobbly. ;)
  • Thak you for all your answers :)

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who thinks there's nothing but rubbish on. We did have Sky until 6 months ago, but due to the OH changing jobs and reducing in income, I decided to cancel it.

It drives him mad that we haven't got it, but if you look at what's on, we've either seen it, or don't care for it. Instead I listen to the radio (always Radio 4) or music, or..... silence!

I'm shocked too, littleowl - how can you not like the Archers??

  • We haven't had broadcast TV for about 4 years now; I didn't have it as a kid either. However, we do watch DVDs (computer hooked up to large screen), and QI and TimeTeam on Iplayer and C4 on demand respectively - never whilst they are being broadcast, though, as we know the rules!
We love not having the constant yatter of adverts and so on, and find time to play lots of board games and computer puzzles games with the kids, as well as rousting them outdoors for cricket etc when the weather is not as FOUL as it is today...

I used to listen to it up until about 6 years ago but the departure of some of the old characters and the broadening of Lilian's role to that of a dipso 'business woman' plus some whinging children turned me off. (OK I did listen in once to experience that). The sound of that woman's voice has me heading for the hills and if I can't get to the off switch quickly enough I have to lie down in a darkened room!
