Trying to disconnect from Virgin

Hi, apologies if I'm posting in the wrong section.
I have the tv, internet and phone package with Virgin. At the end of December I phoned virgin to upgrade my broadband from 10 to 20mb. The only thing I was told on the phone was "yes, no problem I'll do that for you now". Less than 2 weeks later I phoned Virgin to ask them to disconnect all services because I can't afford it because we're now on notice at work. I was told there would be £150 disconnection fee because I entered a 12 month contract when I changed the broadband service at the end of Dec. I told them this was never the case, I would not have agreed to a 12 month contract and asked them to listen to their recorded calls for proof of this. They said not everything is recorded, their system says I was told and I was sent a letter which I never did receive. I've phoned them numerous times and emailed complaints but they will not waive the charge.
Does anyone know if there is anything I can do about this?
Any help appreciated.

Changing your package does I'm afraid invariably start you on a new minimum term contract.
But worth asking them if you can downgrade to a cheaper package, e.g. drop the TV and keep the essentials. No free lunch, and no free laptop
