help with aggregrate grades uni modules

Options
hi guys! wonder if anyone can help me out?

a mate just got his end of yr marks 2nd yr and cannot work out how they were arrived at.

eg a 2.plus and a 1 minus overall 2.1 plus

is there apoints system? and why is it marked down to the lowest assignment? he wonders why he bothers to work harder and improve on the first essay of 2/1plus to get 1 minus.

any help would be useful as he cannot find any grading structure.

is there a course handbook on the web? can he email someone who organises the course for help? is there anyone else on the course who knows? (i'd expect the info to be there somewhere or every person on the course would be emailling right now!). this is likely to be course and/or uni specific.

sounds to me like a 2.1 and a first, which average to a 2.1 (i.e. 71 and 62 average to 66.5, which is a 2.1). you don't get to only count the best piece of work and ignore all the others! if it's an entirely different grading scheme, then i don't understand and someone from the course should help.

he wonders why he should work harder.... i'm all out of things to say to that that aren't rude! (and can't he ask people himself?!)

Presumably an overall mark for the second year is pretty meaningless anyway as the final degree classification will include second and third year marks, so those marks you mention (which I don't understand - what is a 1 minus?) will be averaged out within a broader range of marks eventually, anyway.
Why doesn't your friend just ask one of his tutors? If he doesn't have any access to the grading structure, it's a fair bet that strangers on the internet won't either!

The way my marks are worked out at as follows:
The year is split into four course units though this doesn't mean we necessarily only do four modules - I do 6 half units and 1 full unit course this year.
So each half unit is worth 1/8 of the year.
Each module has it's own assessment, for example: 30% dissertation, 10% laboratory write up, 60% exam. So when all the marks are added the disseration is worth 30% of the final grade etc... so if I get 75% (1) on the dissertation, and 65% on the laboratory report (2.1) and 50% (2.2) on the exam I end up with:
    75% of 30% (22.5), 65% of 10% (6.5) and 50% of 60% (30) I get 59% overall for that unit (2.2).
The overall for each unit is added together in the relevant amount and that's what I get for the year.
It's not just a matter of taking 100% and dividing it by the number of assessments, each assessment is likely to be worth a different % of the final mark.

For your final degree mark it's a bit more complicated because each year is worth different amounts - in my case, 1styear = 1/9, 2nd - 3/9, 3 5/9 and only the best three units go to make up the final mark for the first year.

HTH - but to work it out for your friend's individual course he should look up his course book

Well he went to his uni office and it had been added up wrong! lol!!

He actually got a 2.1plus for assignment which was 30%
1.1minus for essay which was 70%

    so 100% = 10 points for a 1.1-
    9 points for 2.1plus

    add up = 10 plus 9 is 19.

work out 70/30 split and as he got the 1.1minus for 70% overall grade can't possibly be 2.1plus can it. (That's why he said once he got 2.1plus for 30% then bust a gut (his expression) to get a 1.- for the long essay which was 70% and still didn't go up from 2.1plus.)

So the uni had done the 70/30 split the wrong way round so now he gets 1.1minus, as overall mark and he is happy to bust a gut in future.

So it's worth checking marks as not always correct!! ta for help.

After reading this thread I am very pleased my uni has a straightforward grading system!
  • I presume '1.1' is a first? There's no such thing as a 1.1 in grading systems, it goes first, upper second (2.1), lower second (2.2) and third.

Bestpud, my university use a complicated system as well, a 22 point scale with A, B, C, etc. To get a first you need to have 18/22 which works out to be 82%, but it is perfectly possible for an essay to get a full score of 22 unlike in other percentage-related university criteria. It's very strange.

Ours is done on a point system but it is translated into a grade when we get it.

    A-, A or A+ is equivalent to a First.

    B-, B, B+ equivalent to 2:1 and so on.

We can almost always work out what the overall module grade will be, even when there is more than one assignment and they have unequal weighting.

There is a very clear structure giving the number of grades needed to earn a certain degree too.

Perhaps someone should their our uni that then!!

we have 1 plus (first plus)
    1 (first)
    1.minus (first minus)
    2.1plus (two one plus)
    2.1 (two one) etc

Think diff unis have different schemes. Also the marking scheme is not in the course book.

I try to stick to 2.1plus then it's easy but had some first too.

At least my friend got sorted out wonder how often this happens?

Hmm sounds like it's not a proper university - are you sure that maths is a prerequisite to work there?

Juat what we are wondering? The staff blamed the data input staff but surely there should be an audit after marks are input to check they are correct?
