Seriously, what are the fairly new speed cameras, grey, and slimmer than Gatsos ?
  • Gatso's - Catch you from behind. They can however catch you on either side of the road providing there are appropiate markings. So you could get done overtaking someone for instance. Some of them will flash trafic coming towards them but can not prosecute as they are not approved to work in that direction.

Truvelo: Use infra red flash so is not visable. The only ones i have ever seen catch you coming towards you. They have three narrow white lines probably within about 2-5cm of each other going accross the road. The measurement is taken when your front wheels cross these...therefore they cannot simply be turned round.

There also another two types one for trafic light jumping which is are usually grey although i've seen yellow ones. And peek which are rear facing like Gatso's as they flash too.

This website gives a good overview:

if its a speed camera it should be yellow (mobiles dont have to be since the van is painted)

most of the grey ones record car movements (did you know the government records a national database of every car trip over major roads, and keeps it for 5 years?) or tax disc (and possibly insurance)

I thought the part about them having to be painted was only true if the proceeds were to be used to fund more cameras?

They can turn round if they have the lines either side of the camera, :) It means they only have to put one camera in situ

Never seen one with this set up but i'll be happy to be proved wrong.

Why would they bother? If you are speeding towards the camera and manage to slow down for the set of lines proceeding the camera (i.e. the normal layout for truvelo). Then turning it round only serves to give you another 5 metres to slow down.

Heres the link to the camera, if go go left & right youll see the lines either side of the camera on the road.

Haha well thats me told. Honestly never seen that before....how odd!

Still don't really see the point. Unless it is capable of catching people on opposing sides of the road depending on which direction its facing which would stop people only slowing for it one direction (i.e. today it can only get the suzuki, but tomo it could be turned round and be getting the clio). I don't suppose you have found any info about this?

It's automatic and changes during rush hour etc, depending on the time of day and traffic flow. It's a pretty good deterent because your never sure which way the camera is pointing until your by it.
