gatso cameras

Hi
I wanted to ask 2 quick questions

can gatso cameras work when they are on the other side of the road, when you are approaching them?(with no lines on the floor in your lane, but on the otherside with the camera) hence camera will flash in front of you.

Or is it that they have to be on your side of the road?(with lines on the floor in your lane, but not in the oncoming lane) hence the camera will flash behind you.

It's always quite amusing when you see motorists slamming on their brakes for a camera on the OTHER side of the road.

They will sometimes flash oncoming traffic but I think this tends to be when the film has run out so it's more of a deterrent than actual speed enforcement. I've been flashed quite a few times by a local camera when I'm going the opposite direction but not had any NIPs from it yet.

Are you sure they are Gatsos and not Truvelo cameras which are supposed to be forward facing, in which case they can be set up for either side of the road.

Can somebody please clarify a point about Truvelo cameras and maybe there might be a warning here.

I've read a few threads about them being forward facing, ie they catch you before you go past them, and it had me wondering about two near me on the A6.

Basically both Truvelo cameras face the same direction , on opposite sides of the road, only about 50 yards apart. Surely, you would imagine, that at least one set of these cameras are actually catching cars after they pass them, ie, photographing the rear of the car.

Or am I missing the point? Thank you.

Its all about type approval, they have to be OK'd by parliament and there given a set of rules how they should be used

GATSOs (which have square windows) have a visible white flash, because there's a chance it could blind someone at night they are only type approved to be rear facing.

TRUVELOs (with the round windows) use an infra red flash (which I can partially see :p) so are type approved to be front and rear facing.

Type approval has also lead to a myth about the SPECS system (the distance over time cameras) in that changing lane defeated it. Well originally it did but this had nothing to so with limitations of the technology as it was down to the rules for its type approval, this was fairly quickly changed so now all the cameras count as 1 starting point and 1 finishing point.

So when there are say four of these cameras in a motorway roadworks does that mean that they are taking separate and simultaneous measurements between cameras A and B, and A and C, and B and C etc?

you past the first set of cameras "A" it takes a time Reading and reads your reg number, you past set "B" it takes the time again, they know the distance between A and B so it's basic maths to work out your speed.

I have always assumed they read them as A-B B-C C-D etc but there is no reason why they could not do A-D as well if some what pointless.

Sometimes when you go through A camera and some smartass flies by you well over the limit, and you think hasn`t that idiot seen the average speed warning signs, they suddenly turn off at the next exit before they get to B camera.
(Obviously local and know the camera layout)
