Scottish Hydro Electric - 'Economy' 10

Dunloadin,
Spot on with your observations.
With knowledge of the property :-
The hot water cylinder is an independent system to the Heatrae Sadia electric wet boiler.
No gas in immediate area and no love of storage radiators = electric wet system installation.
Economy 10 is without doubt the only tarriff for the electric boiler if used outwith the overnight cheap period for other Economy tarriffs.
Independent programmers control both systems - generally, the heating system doesn't get used during the summer months, leaving the hot water cylinder to charge up overnight ( or during the other off-peak times ) at cheap rate electricity - cylinder insulated.
Not exactly easy to fund or install a ground source heat pump, but the new government scheme for solar panels would appear to make this a viable option for owner / user ( over a long period ) as opposed to being installed for the rental market.
That said, surprised as to the proposed bills for 3 months usage when used so little ..... unless the boiler kicks on during the day at the expensive rate ( which appears to have been the case, considering the outside temperature has only been above 5 degrees for a small fraction of the Winter )
Absolutely no requirement whatsoever to set the system for 8 degrees kick-in all day given that the heating pipework is well insulated, and in a modern(ish) flat - re-programme the system to kick-in at 7.30 pm ( unfortunately 1 hour before the cheap rate starts for SHE ) to heat up the flat before arriving back from work, and then get cheap electricity after 8.30 to avert multiple jumper / sock usage.
To move on however - single glazing is a definite problem, and curtains must be considered / utilised to retain heat.
Efficiency of stainless steel radiators output not the best, and replacement with better conducting ( but not as aesthetic ) rads.a future option ( at a fraction of the cost of designer rads ).
Checking out of SHE rate as quoted in first post as opposed to the cheaper rates detailed within the link.
And, of course, using hungry washing machines during the off peak times ( which will be used given the occupancy times noted above ).
Am now off to think about 6 month switches between Economy 10 & Economy 7 for the different times of the year.....0 -
The rates in the link are well old, dont think the website has been updated.
Flitting between Eco7 and Eco10 every 6 months is a non-starter....unless you want to pay for a meter change every 6 months.0 -
Current rates for SHE are 7.33p ( off peak ), 13.47 ( peak ) & 24.81p / day.
( sussed out impracticalities of flitting between economies as being a non-starter just after I posted ).
Scottish Power are now advising that they don't now do Economy 10 !
With further input now received from Triggerhappy, it looks like the heating has come on during the day when no-one was in.
With that in mind, the bills for the last 6 months average out about £80, but replacement jumper and sock costs have gone through the roof.
Q - for a modernish 2 bedroom flat, without gas, but with storage heating, what bill size is normal for electricity at present ( for non weekday occupation ) ?0 -
Economy 10 prices at April 2009 can be found by googling scottish hydro electric economy 10 tariff rates xls.
I have just received an estimate from hydro electric for the next year coming and they quote
off peak unit price 7.53 pence and standard unit price 13.86 pence.
I live in Aberdeenshire0 -
