Carpet Right

To cut a long story short - fitter came fitted carpets - I then find out he has hammered the gripper rods through my sky cables - had to buy a new sky box :(
Complained and he phoned me offered my half the money - I said I wanted all the money and told him to speak to his insurance company (am told by Carpet Right they have to have insurance) - since then nothing - have called him over 10 times. Carpet Right saying not their problem?
Have now written to the Chairman, Managing Director and sent registered letter to the fitter?
Am I screwed - is there really nothing I can do?

Why on earth would you have to buy a new sky box if all he'd done was damage your cable. Also, you're not supposed to run Sky cable under carpets.
  • Check your paperwork - your entire contract will likely be with CarpetRight, and therefore they need to sort it out, either themselves or via the fitter. Yes, the fitter will have to have liability insurance but CarpetRight is who you need to deal with I think, unless you actually had a different contract for fitting.

If they won't stump up the full amount in the end, threaten small claims court and follow through with it if necessary. Contact Consumer Direct for advice if need be. Did you take photos and/or get written details from whoever sorted your Sky out?

I'm getting deja vu. I'm sure I read this same thread last week, either here or on digitalspy. The OP paid cash to the fitter or something.

  • Hi - in reply to a couple of peoples answers...............the gripper rod went into the skybox cable and it shorts something in the skybox which means the timer does not work when setting it to record - it would record if you just press the red 'r' but the timer function did not work. The ariel/sky guy knew straight away as soon as he saw the new carpet and lifted it up from the floor.
And yes it was me on digitalspy - at first I posted as I just thought they had pulled the cables out of the box and they were not fitting correctly - but it was more serious than that.
I did pay the fitter directly as that was what Carpet Right told me to do - they send the fitter.
Like I say have put my complaint in writing - will let you know how I get on.
    Painful.

Steady.................I did not buy a new box just for the hell of it - it was not recording - funnily enough I have better things to do with £300.
The fitter put my cable under the carpet - I came into the room and he had done it.

I suspect that your contract was with the fitter, as you paid him directly. I am sure this is what Carpetright will use in their defence.

I'm assuming you've now got new cabliing, in which case did you try out your old box to see if it worked with this? What sort of box was it - Sky+ or Sky+ HD?

I suspect that your contract was with the fitter, as you paid him directly. I am sure this is what Carpetright will use in their defence. Meaning your claim more than likely with the fitter.

I'm sure i'll be corrected shortly.

It was a Sky+ box - got a new box - the rods caused a short in the box - so essentially it still worked in terms of getting a picture and would record as you stood there pressing the record button -but set the planner and it was having none of it.
The ariel/sky guy knew as soon as he walked into the room - said he sees it loads of time - very common problem.

That is exactly what the head office have said - and also the guy I spoke to at the depot where the fitter came from.
They have both said the fitter is insured so he has to claim on his insurance - which is what I told the fitter.
But common sense would suggest as I had no control over who the fitter was that Carpet Right should except some responsibility - but then when did common sense come into anything :)
To be honest I fell pretty horrid having such a go about it - the fitter seemed to be a really nice guy - did not speak a lot of english and told me he lived in a smaller flat than mine (and trust me its a tiny flat) with his two kids - so I don't want him to lose his job or anything - but on the other hand I'm stuck paying for a new box which I would have thought should be covered by his insurance.
