I suspect the account has been frozen by Halifax due to suspected money laundering. However, as the payments came direct from another UK bank account, there should be no requirement for the OP to prove the source of the money - that would have been carried out by the Nationwide when the money was paid into the cousin's bank account.

  • Good grief, what a palavar!
When an inheritance from my Mum came through after probate I had a transfer of over £100k into my account with NatWest with no problems. It even initiated a call from the manager to ask if they could advise me how to invest it! *roll eyes smiley*

ETA: at the time this was a basic account with no chequebook!

  • That's awful, in my years of cashier working (eeuurrgghh will never go back :D) I've never heard of that. People had far more than that going into their accounts and unless it was from a country on the money laundering list, we didn't question it. And even if we did, we wouldn't go about blocking ALL your accounts!! Don't blame you for moving accounts. As soon as you get the go ahead to move your money over to the new bank, I'd announce your reasons for your displeasure slightly louder than necessary in the middle of the branch. At a busy lunchtime. ;)

Have you asked to speak to a manager? I would go into the branch (don't bother phoning you're much better going in face to face) and don't go anywhere until you get to see the manager.

I hate when people do this. Don't you think he has a job to do and can't drop everything at the drop of a hat? Fair enough, he may have time... But if not make an appointment like everyone else.

No I think he is there to manage things that need sorting, like someone being left with no money due to the bank over reacting.

  • Well it is now sorted, but im still mad and upset. I think I want to make a complaint but im not sure who too or if I have a valid complaint.
What is upseting the most is:
I went to the bank with all my id and my grans paper work, they made the phone call and the person on the other end of the phone wanted EVERYTHING, they have now got faxed copies of the Will, Probate, Id, Bankstatements ect. I am really disgusted my Grans Paperwork is nothing to do with them. Why couldnt they just see i was a benaficiary of the will and see that my cousin (whos account the money came from) Is the executeer.
It makes me mad that I had to stand in the middle of a bank, stood at a little tiny desk with all my grans paperwork spread everywhere with it all falling on the floor, everybody hearing my buisness this all took 50mins to sort out.
    No apology, or explination.

I would definitely complain about this, even taking it as far as the ombudsman. Your local newspaper would probably be interested too

Well if they're anything like my old manager at the bank they'll do some work for a change. My one used to hide out the back office on her mobile all the time; if you told her a customer wanted to see the manager she'd roll her eyes and ask why we couldn't deal with it ourselves :( Then go back to yapping away. She'd emerge eventually, after you'd taken an earful from the customer.......she got moved to another branch and department in the end, but we all knew she was being shafted for being carp ;)

And definetely complain eketra, they should have taken you into a private office for that sort of thing.

If you need some power to argue with, print this thread and show this post. I had £25,000 transferred into my account with Barclays two months ago. I then transferred this back out to ING so she can benefit from the interest rate.

My mother (who's money it was) got a call from Barclays Fraud saying "is this right?", but that was all. I've yet to be suspended by Barclays for having such an unusual amount go in and out in a short period...

I'm sorry to hear you went through this.

About 5 years ago my DH and I sold our house cos we were planning on emigrating. The equity was put into our joint current account. From that point onwards we had a bug*er of a time getting access to any of it.

The night before we were due to fly we booked into a hotel at Heathrow. The following morning on check out my current account debit card was declined. We had NO ACCESS to our bank account. The Halifax said that they had increased the security level on the account due to a large sum going in.

We had no warnings, nothing. Very, very annoying. Got it sorted eventually after a blunt phone call from the hotel to the customer services. Still had problems for months after that though. Any payments above about £50 were being either referred or just declined.
