Botched join between flat roof and main roof

  • There's some gap between the existing and the new tiles!

What's with the bits of old tiles to the left of the pic?

What's in the gun that the roofer is using?

The bits of old tiles are ones that have broken off when trying to remove them, the spray foam holds them in place so tightly that they break away.

    Dunno whats in the gun!!
  • spray foam

Are you talking about expanding foam?
  • Are you talking about expanding foam?

Yes! The stuff that gets sprayed on the inside of the roof to (supposedly) prolong their life. I didnt put it in, it was done by the previous owner.

  • Can this foam be trimmed/cut by sawing, like expanding foam?
  • I guess so, but one of the roofers tried and couldnt manage it, its so hard and dense.
  • As you said the 'bossman' should have looked at the job properly, the problem is, if the foam can't be cut back there is very little they can do NOW. Even going back up the roof a few courses that wouldn't do any good either, as the whole roof is foamed.

If the felt has been taken well up under the last tile (cover) it's probable that the roof will be water tight, although driving rain could be a problem. I would still push them to come up with a solution. He was forewarned...
  • What i know about asbestos tiles I could write on the back of a stamp, although... these tiles should be mechanically secured, the glue gun is a complete botch.
  • I know a couple of roofers, the general consensus from them is to steer clear of foamed roofs

    Neither would have touched it

Did you get any others round to quote?
    baldly going on...
  • Thanks, i will continue to push them for a solution, and i am getting other quotes replace the main roof, part of roof or try to patch up their mess!!

As for the original flat roof job, i only got them in to quote as i wanted a rubberbond roof. The neighbours had used them and were happy.
  • The presence of expanding foam to the main roof, and whether the contractor looked at this prior to quoting is irrelevent.

The junction of a flat and pitched roof is a standard and easy detail, and the contractor should do the work properly - foam or not.

The job done is unsatisfactory and not acceptable at all.

    What should be done is

approx 500mm of the pitched roof tiles are removed
(insulation inserted betweent the rafters to replace the foam which comes off with the tiles)
some plyboard fixed to the top of the pitched roof rafters
a layer of breather membrane (or felt) laid on this
the new flat roof cover is then taken up the pitched roof to cover the plyboard and over a lath to prevent water being blown up under the tiles

Then the tiles are replaced on laths, to form a nice straight edge

Its clear that the contractors who did the work have not got a clue abour flat/pitched roof junctions
