It would be worse if your mother-in-law gave you a copy of Kim and Aggie's book rather than your mother!

I wouldn't be too impressed about that! My MIL lives in South Africa and has someone to come and clean for her - I don't think she's done housework for years! When I lived over there I couldn't face the thought of a stranger coming into my house - everyone thought I was a bit odd doing my own cleaning :rotfl:

i am one of those people who would clean for the cleaner coming in
and yes, i do my hair before the hairdresser comes:D
  • I can't watch it anymore - I used to love picking up cleaning tips, but then the programme seemed to change from picking people who were simply lazy, grubby and disorganised into selecting people who lived in such dreadful conditions that they were obviously mentally ill...I remember there was a woman had loads of birds and let them fly around in the house all the time, and so the front room was covered in bird droppings which had been left for years and slugs had actually infested under the sofa.... that is not normal, and the poor woman was definitely not quite right. And then to watch Kim and Aggie stand there and scold her for not using bicarb on the silver or whatever when clearly she had much bigger problems I just felt to be really unfair.

I found their book in the charity shop and made do with that rather than watch them!

Im with Midnight raven, or used to be!
We have the pub now, but, I was almost OCD! I used to comb the fringes of a rug i had so they were all neat... it drove OH mad, so he cut them off!
I also was obsessed with emptying ashtrays (we smoke and most of our friends do, yet I cant stand ashtrays!) and I had "for show" towels, that no one that knew us was allowed to use, they all knew that when they washed their hands, the towels were in the cupboard under the sink!
It was even mentioned at our wedding that I was "monica" they meant the one from friends, however the whole monica lewinsky thing was around at the time... should have seen MILs face!!!
The thing is tho, everyone used to say it was home - we had open door policy, people would walk in and out when they wanted, and never felt uncomfortable, they just accepted that I was how I was, and teased me! Guess thats what friends are for! We even took one in to live with us for almost 2 years - when we moved, I changed the bathroom, and he was so conditioned that he couldnt bring himself to use the "for show towels" despite the colour sheme having changed and them clearly being for general use!
I am less anal now! I work in the kitchen here, so thats sparkly and pristine, but as for the rooms and the Inn itself, I dont have control - which is a good thing for the staff, but I cant help when i walk through, noticing things like finger prints on doors or cobwebs, but I blame that on the fact that if I can see it, a customer can!!!

I love the program, I am totally amazed by their tips, the way some people live ( I dont berate them, I just wonder how it got that bad) and how much better it is after the visit, however, I also like that often when they re visit, some things have changed and are still good, but they also carried on living their lives their way and some things are how they like it :)

I used to be the same, matching towels in bathrooms - on show not to be touched etc. I have 3 bathrooms and each bathroom has it own colour scheme and god help someone if they put the wrong colour towel in the wrong bathroom.

I would constantly tidy up, I hated anything on the floor, even the OH didn't get to finish his coffee half the time, before I whipped his cup away and stuck it in the dishwasher.

I disliked having the main light on in the lounge - I could see dust particles floating, as my OH is a reader and I bought him a light to fit to the page of his book as he was always complaining he couldn't see the print.

I'm no where near like the above now, my house resembles Beriut today, and I have recently got 2 long haired cats, which I would never have done a few years ago.

We are happier as a family I believe now, cause I'm not constantly saying move this please, move that.

I can't believe some of those people on that programme though, its beyond dirt and dust, pure flith and no need for that nowadays with the modern gadgets.....talking of gadgets, I better empty the dishwasher and re fill it up, the cups have been sitting in the sink since yesterday morning...yuk.

I wonder why anyone would want to go on tv and show to the world what a completely disgusting slob they are?

I guess they are mostly the mentally ill & the programme uses them as cheap entertainment for cannon fodder.

Only white for sheets & towels, I can't bear coloured ones, I think they hide dirt:o

I hate the "big" lights on too, I like the mood lower light levels create, even in the kitchen I usually use the under cabinet lights & hob light instead of ceiling down lighters

I think as long as your house isn't dirty, it doesn't matter if it's messy. I tidy periodically and then I put everything where it's supposed to be and clean over everything. After it's done, even one thing being put down in the wrong place makes it messy again so as long as it's physically clean I don't mind heaps, clutter.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

I have a dodgy lower back so have to be careful with certain things and watch I don't overdo it (the sore back also makes me more tired!). I also have a toddler!
This said it is presentable enough, reasonably ordered (even the spare/storage room), and like another poster said clean where it needs to be (eg kitchen surfaces, fridge, loo etc). I think it is all about balance (my fave word)- clean enough to relax in yet also dirty enough to relax in, if that makes sense!

My house is generally full of toys, books, etc but it is clean. I tidy periodically as we go by our days but it often isn't enough, so every now and then have a blitz using the flylady lists to keep on top of it. I would say it's about average for a house with 2 very young children :D

I have a relative who cleans for a living. One of the lady she cleans for is a very nice lady who is also a well educated medical practitioner. But she sleeps with dirty plates  Said cleaner has one heck of a weekly battle, and each time has to lug seven days-worth of discarded food across the kitchen to the outside bins, followed by ants... I never believed that programme at first either... ;)

The only person I know whose house is like the one on the programme is a friend who is slightly mentally handicapped. He is mega-organised, has a place for everything and looks after himself very well - he just never cleans!
I have decided I will have to lend a hand, hadn't seen his house until recently. However, the toilet is as bad if not worse then the ones on Kim & Aggie!! I think he would quite like Kim and Aggie round, he'd love the attention!
I clean for a living, but am quite relaxed about my own house, in fact it would probably be best if I didn't invite my boss round! I keep kitchen, toilets and floors clean, but have to admit that there is more dust about than I should have considering my job.
Trouble is when you have cleaned 4 houses in a day, guess what's the last thing you feel like doing when you get home!!
