My mum bought me the book for xmas one year - well you can imagne how well recieved that was! Would have been ok if I had bought i myself lol

Sounds like something my mum would do, she would think my house was messy just because I've got a few bits on the mantlepiece & a basket of ironing to be done.

Mine is mainly clean and tidy but there always seems to be something that needs doing! I dont have time to keep my house pristine as I work full time but I would not be ashamed if any one visited.

Im with Midnight raven, or used to be!
We have the pub now, but, I was almost OCD! I used to comb the fringes of a rug i had so they were all neat... it drove OH mad, so he cut them off!
I also was obsessed with emptying ashtrays (we smoke and most of our friends do, yet I cant stand ashtrays!) and I had "for show" towels, that no one that knew us was allowed to use, they all knew that when they washed their hands, the towels were in the cupboard under the sink!
It was even mentioned at our wedding that I was "monica" they meant the one from friends, however the whole monica lewinsky thing was around at the time... should have seen MILs face!!!
The thing is tho, everyone used to say it was home - we had open door policy, people would walk in and out when they wanted, and never felt uncomfortable, they just accepted that I was how I was, and teased me! Guess thats what friends are for! We even took one in to live with us for almost 2 years - when we moved, I changed the bathroom, and he was so conditioned that he couldnt bring himself to use the "for show towels" despite the colour sheme having changed and them clearly being for general use!
I am less anal now! I work in the kitchen here, so thats sparkly and pristine, but as for the rooms and the Inn itself, I dont have control - which is a good thing for the staff, but I cant help when i walk through, noticing things like finger prints on doors or cobwebs, but I blame that on the fact that if I can see it, a customer can!!!

I love the program, I am totally amazed by their tips, the way some people live ( I dont berate them, I just wonder how it got that bad) and how much better it is after the visit, however, I also like that often when they re visit, some things have changed and are still good, but they also carried on living their lives their way and some things are how they like it :)

  • I have a fairly clean house because there is only me living in it.It gets untidy at times but it is my home and if I want to leave the crossword open on the table or my knitting on my chair then I will. I couldn't go to bed knowing there was washing up to be done though and I like to 'swish' around my kitchen and the surfaces before bed no matter what the time is,only because I would hate the thought of coming down in the morning to a sinkful of dishes. My DD carries my dyson upstairs for me and does my bedrooms on a Sunday morning and bless her will brush the stairs down on her way down, but that is because I have limited mobility in my right arm and cannot carry anything heavier than a cup of tea. I have to take care that I don't fall when on the stairs as I also have crunbling bones. But on the whole I manage quite well I do have to sit to iron though and window washing is a no-no. I have two terrific daughters who give me a hand and I recipricate by loads of baby sitting and I also cook stuff for their freezers for them as the both work. So I still keep my independance in my own home and they get the kids taken to school or college and HM meals for the freezer. One of my best friends came during the week and painted the woodwork and emulsioned the walls in my small computer room for me and in return I took her out for a meal, and also cooked for us both during the two days she was staying. I am very lucky in that I have a very close family who help me with the things I can no longer do and I help them with things I can do.

  • Because some of the homes are so bad I did think the producers asked these people to let them get that way to make a good programme. I am not house proud but could not imagine eating a meal in some of the kitchens and as for the toilets, well. I have never ever been to a home that is even half as bad as some of those so I do wonder.

It would be worse if your mother-in-law gave you a copy of Kim and Aggie's book rather than your mother!
