phoning son on mobile while he's in spain ...

Options
can anyone update the best way to keep contact with son while he's on holiday in spain next week.

Thought i'd seen some chat on here regarding a clever new scheme with t- mobile ? .... but as always i struggle to find anything relevant when i use the "search " function.

we have a choice we can both use our t mobiles .. or we can phone him on his t mobile .. from our uk landline.

or whether it's better/cheaper for him to phone us from spain on his t mobile .. to us here on landline ..or t mobiles

Yes. The T-mobile change is allowing those 07744 callthrough numbers from inclusive minutes, but this would be for foreign numbers.

If you call a UK mobile, it's the same cost to you wherever it is, but the receiving phone gets charged for the forwarding to the other country.

T-mobile roaming charges have been cut a bit recently, but I still wouldn't say cheap - 55p a minute for outgoing calls on a contract one, with 20p/min receive if you sign up for their international option

It depends how much you'll use it. If you intend more than a few minutes use, then he could get a Spanish SIM. His phone would need unlocking from the network - advice on this in a couple of threads at the top - cheaper Nokias are easiest using a free code they'd calculate for you on the thread. Then you could use Yourcallworld mentioned above ot PlanetTalkFree to call the Spanish number from your inclusive minutes, on weekdays. Other 07744 providers such as Simply-Fone have access to Spanish landlines only

For calls home (landlline much cheaper than mobile), he could use a calling card with a local Spanish access number

If you go on something such as talk talks free broadband package you also get free international calls abroad to landlines and the mobile phone rate is quite low at 20p per min. for Spain.
    Thanks

    Off-topic I think

I would not call 20p a minute low - 10p maybe, via cheap calls providers on the MSE Callchecker - from landlines. But from mobiles, as already discussed, these calls would be available from T-mob inclusive minutes.

And I would not sign up to TalkTalk broadband for any reason at the moment, let alone cheap calls for a one week holiday. For anyone making calls abroad a lot more than that, there are plenty of other cheap calls available from other providers.

How you can say its off topic when it directly provides a possible answer to the question i don't know and secondly 20 p per min is cheaper than the average call charge of 45 55 p per min that most network operators would charge to call a phone abroad in Spain!
    Thanks

Sure - next time I want to use TalkTalk broadband from my mobile, I'll ask your advice.

If you bother to read the posts above, it says 3 times now that calls to a Spanish mobile may be made from T-mobile inclusive minutes via a callthrough number.

If this is being expanded to foreign calls from all UK mobile networks, then direct-calling with the various int'l options - Orange 20p, O2 17p, T-mobile 20p, and so on, but some have callthrough arrangements possible from inclusive minutes, and some can use 18185 or calling cards for about 1p for landlines and 10p for mobiles.

Similar opportunities for cheap calls arise from landlines, and the MSE Callchecker shows rather cheaper rates then 20p to mobiles.

So please do not promote TT by comparing to incorrect tariffs or irrelevant circumstances.

[my apologies to the OP about this]
