Why do so few people cycle?

    I've been Money Tipped!
    I don't cycle because
    a) I only live 1-2 miles away from anywhere I need - shops and work
    b) I prefer to walk
    c) Cycling scares the sh$t out of me since I got squashed between a bus and a lorry:eek:

  • £100 will get you a perfectly good second-hand road bike. You don't have to use the dual carriageway, and 10 miles can be completed in no more than 45 minutes. The thing about sweat is a myth, it dries in minutes and you do not smell. You look like a power ranger on your motorbike.

Doesnt actually bother me when I fly past a cyclist on said dual carriageway doing a ton and they are struggling to get up the hill :rotfl: :T

This attitude always bugs me - why does a cyclist have to wear hi-viz gear to be seen? I know it makes them more visible in poor lighting conditions, but you should still be looking around, able to see other road users whatever they are wearing. You don't expect pedestrians to wear dayglo gear all the time.

Maybe they should insist that all cars are painted dayglo yellow, just so that the less observant drivers have a bit more of a chance to avoid them.

I'm not sure it's 'attitude' to be honest. I think it's a sensible precaution. The human brain is not that great at distinguishing approach speeds without being influenced by size/conspicuity. People are much less likely to risk pulling into a small gap in front of an LGV than a bike, and it's not just because of the reduced personal risk. I'd always have my lights on when riding, but don't in a car.

Me, I'm another lazy !!!!!! who likes warmth and the Today programme. I'm not sure I could do the 15 miles to work in a sensible time, although the route is fairly cycle friendly, and of course half the reason I couldn't cycle it is that I spend most of my time sitting on my butt.

I was just wondering why there seems to be so few people on here that cycle/ask questions about cycling, especially as cycling is so MSE. :money:

    Do any of you cycle?

If you don't, have you ever considered it?

    If not why not?

What would help you to do it?

The route I take to work and back is far too dangerous (narrow, windy 60 limit B roads with high hedges and no means of escape).. I cycled for a few weeks, but the number of near misses with cars was ridiculous, I'd have been a statistic by now if I'd continued.

    katiex

PS I live in the middle of nowhere, need a car to go to shops and work. Couldnt get shopping on a bike, and nowhere to shower or park at work. & it's -3 out today.

Simply not viable for me. Its 70 miles to work and 70 back.....

Oh, and I live down an unmade track, riding my racing bike (purchased when I lived in the middle of town) down there would destroy it in a matter of days....... :rotfl:
Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male:

  • Ride almost every day, only days I don't is if it's snowing or have to go other places other than main place of work.

I think most people don't because they are lazy or not confident enough to ride, yes distance can be an issue, but all of the people in my office live close enough to cycle with the exception of the boss, and there is only me that does.

Here we have bike sheds, where the security is ok, good enough for me to leave my bike and it's worth over £1000. We have lockers, showers, changing rooms. Honestly it's brilliant, where I used to work it was have a wash in the sink.

I'm sure that you could cycle for some journeys if you wanted? Edinburgh's a compact city and most destinations are within easy cycling distance. Give it a go: you'll feel better for it!
