How to tell when the timing belt on a Daewoo Lanos needs replacing.

Change the belt. Mine snapped last week, 10000 miles before it was due to be changed per manufacturers guidelines. I'm expecting a bill of more than £1000.0

It's quite possible that a cam chain will outlast the engine. But yes, if the rest of the engine/car lasts long enough, the chain will eventually need replacing. I've certainly been there before.Je suis Charlie.0 -
The cam belt will give you warning that it about to go it will just go and wreck the engine if any doubt change it also make sure they change the cam belt rollers as well as these also cna cause failed cam belts. Usually google search doesn't bring up anything on when teh change should be. but usually 60k or 4 or 5 years.0

What I can't understand is why these cam belts are so fragile. I've got a Harley Davidson motorcycle which has a toothed-belt final drive. These belts have a horrendous life: they are long; the load is huge, is applied in big thumps at the rate of about one per lamp-post, and is continually changing direction; and they have to perform outdoors in all weathers and conditions. And yet, they last between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Mine has done 15,000 so far and hasn't even needed adjusting yet.
By comparison, cam belts seem positively cosseted. So how come they only last 40,000 miles?Je suis Charlie.0 -
Cam belts have a pretty hard life. Cam shaft loads are pretty high and they have to hold the cam timing pretty tightly. I'd guess that if they use a much larger belt on the engine then they'd run into problems with space and also the need for larger bearing shells.Happy chappy0
