I've just received my first water bill since i moved from a house to a flat and the sewerage charges are more than the actual water bill,i don't remember them being this high in the house.I have a meter and the flat is 3 years old.Are the sewerage charges normal for everyone and why do we have to pay them. Also when i lived in a house i paid surface water charges and now i live in a block of 8 flats i still have to pay the same and i presume the other flats do,one house one charge and now one block of flats and eight seperate charges.

Flats are charged surface water drainage as the site area tends to be large and no one tenant would pay that.

Sewerage is more expensive with some water companies and you have found one that is. Nothing you can do, sorry.

You are paying for the water company to take away your waste and clean it up before it's released into the waterways/ sea.

How is it worked out, does it go through a meter like incoming water or is it a standard fee,why does it work out more for sewage than incoming water.

They make the assumption that 90% of the water supplied will be returned to the sewer.

If you can prove that less than 90% is returned - e.g. you have a smallholding with loads of greenhouses - you can get a reduction in sewerage rates; but they really do need proof.

If the assumption is 90% then why is my sewerage charge more than my actual water bill

    90% of the quantity.

So if you used 100 cubic metres, they assume that 90 cubic meters returns to the sewer.

They charge more for sewerage per cubic meter.

So if the charge was £1 per cubic metre for water and £2 per cubic metre for sewerage, for the 100 cubic meters supplied you would be charged £280 (£1 x 100 + £2 x 90)

    Note:
Some water companies calculate as above. Some reduce the price of sewerage by 10% and charge for the full amount of water. e.g in the example above it would be £1 x 100 = £100 + £1.80 x 100 = £180 so same total of £280

As far as I remember Yorkshire water have an annual sewerage standing charge which is the same for all domestic customers and is pro rated to each bill period. The charge covers the used water standing charge and surface water. Therefore you pay a lower standing charge if the surface water doesn't go to the sewer. Then you pay for the used water based on 95 per cent of the water recorded coming into the property.

It's only the used water consumption charge which is at 95 per cent. The used water standing charge including surface water will often make the overall sewerage charge higher than the water.
