Internet Line Speeds...help me Money Saving Experts...you're my only hope...

Options
Hello,

Can anyway offer me any advice please.

I use 'TalkTalk' for my internet provider, formerly with 'Tiscali' with BT supplying the line (do they still have a monopoly on phone lines?) but my download speeds have suddenly become really slow.

I've done a line-speed check using 'Think Broadband' and the figures that came back are -
Speed Down - 5342.31 Kbps (5.2 Mbps)
Speed Up 73.59 Kbps (0.1 Mbps)

My line speed with TalkTalk is supposed to be 8Meg.

Can anyone with an ounce of knowledge regarding line-speeds etc explain if this is good or poop.

Thank you in advance.

That isnt too bad especially as its a cheap ISP, cheap as in you get what you pay for

Line speeds depend on contention and distance to exchange plus line quality. The further you are from exchange the less speed generally

8Mbps is really not achievable able normally unless exchange is next door, I would say 5-7 Mbps is about the norm unless you live a couple of miles from exchange

Thank you so much for the quick reply, it seems that TalkTalk is a bit of a poor mans Virgin, I thinks I may have to give 'em the elbow. I'll just say 'TalkTalk, it's not you, it's me, it's just something I'm going through'.

    I'm sure they'll understand.

    Thanks again.

Speedtesters are inaccurate. You need to know what speed your router is synchronising with the exchange is.
To do this you have to log into your router and find your line statistics.

    Find out how here.

PS your download ain't bad but your upload speed is rubbish, are you sure the deimal pint is in the right place?

Jeeezus, you lot on here are super good at helping schmuckos like me. Thanks again an' again an' again.

My router speeds/config using the 'kitz' site is -

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7008 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.0 db 17.5 db
Noise Margin 10.9 db 23.0 db

Now to me, it may as well be in Esperanto. Bit of a luddite y'see.

If anyone replies to this and, more importantly, understands it, you are an angel.

    Thank you.

Those figures are good. So what is your basis for saying that it's slower?

Is it just slower during day say 8am until 10pm, because if yes then this is down to contention that being the ISP is sharing you with up to 50 others

Those results look fine to me

If you often download from the same site, and that download is slower than it used to be, then it could simply be that server which is slower rather than your broadband connection.

now i do agree with everyone saying that conection is a good speed, the problem is that talk talk are generally considered as one of the worst ISP's around, now considering your sync speed it looks like you are very close to your local phone exchange, with this in mind i would suggest checking which LLU/cable providers are available to you

    http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

go to the above link and put in your telephone number and postcode which should provide the details of who is available to you and if you are lucky we could get you on a better ISP
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Thats the thing with cheap ISP you generally get a congested and sometimes restricted broadband service

I always go for ISP with good reputation and or good unrestricted service. Zen are top notch sued them for 4 years until recently. I now left them for up to 20Mbps LLU service unrestricted too. I also tend to avoid the larger companies too

I do pay more but to me the above is important to me as I want a fast and reliable service
