The engine, I believe is the one used in the BMW 320D - the BHP is slightly lower in the Rover than in the BMW model but that is down to Electronic Engine Management and not the engine itself, so basically you've got a BMW engine, and many of the 320D's are still running with happy owners well over 200k miles, in fact this engine, like most BMW / VW etc engines was designed for German Autobahns and Motorway mile munching - high milage is no big deal.

Oil changes are pretty expensive on this engine, as it uses BMW approved synthetic oil, but the same can be said for any modern Turbo Diesel. As far as engine parts are concerned, any BMW dealer should be able to obtain them for you.

BMW oil and filter changes cost around £120, so I would say a similar price for the Rover. However you can save money by buying 7 or 8 litres of approved oil from online suppliers like http://www.opieoils.co.uk/ and just pay the local garage for the filter and the labour for the oil change. Works out about £40 cheaper, and you are assured that the correct oil has been used in your car - it also has the advantage of any excess you can keep for "top ups" between oil changes.

Oil changes are no brainers to any garage, provided you watch them to make sure your valuable oil isn't replaced with unbranded 'glug' whilst your car is elft with them. Get the independants to change the oil and stamp the book, and leave the major services to the stealers.
