so...are they cavity walls with no insulation, or are they solid brick with no cavity.....is this owned or rented?

Solid brick... Was cold there is only a very small cavity in there, not big enough for insulation

Mmmm.....I see, OK if the oil filled rad is undersized and fitted against a cold uninsulated wall...under a large window or near a window, there will be a downflow of much colder air that the heater has to deal with constantly, this is the heat loss of the room to counter that effect a heat emitter with a larger surface area would cope, if it were a double panel double convector type radiator for a room of that size you would require 600mmx 1400mm at 70 degree flow temp (delta T 50c), for room temp of 18 degrees.

you would probably benefit from a 3 kW fan heater, although running any electric heater is going to wack the bills up, not good!! but what other options do you have? Air con heating, costly to install (c £1,400).

So if an oil rilled radiator is used the size is important rather than just the wattage, I was considering a 2kw delonghi stretto. But being such a small compact unit, it wont be much better even though being 750 watt more powerful?

Oddly enough I find a cheap 2Kw convection heater running on thermostat keeps the room comfortably warm.

I hear you saying, why not just use that?

Just wondering why being a convector rather than a flat panel oil filed rad and 750 watt makes all the difference. Is it just "one of those things"

Yeah I considered a heat pump but due to the area I live in, it wont last 5 mins before it gets vandalised, not financially viable for me having an annual electric bill of £850 a year. Also I hear they are rather noisy

It is better to have something a little oversized.... you can always turn it down, running a smaller unit non stop is wasteful and will never get the temperature up, however this is a large room, you would be better off using two heaters, one over by the window to counter the heatloss, and another at other end, dont forget , heat rises, so with the high ceilings the heat is being lost before it has a chance to heat you.....you are near the floor...so heat where you are.....floor mounted fan heaters with thermostats and timers fitted, are better in your situation IMO.... hope this helps

because as allen stated, due to the grilles at the bottom and the top, it grabs more air and convects this as an upward flow of heat, heating the surrounding air.....as opposed to....like you described...half the panel against a cold surface...you are only getting half the output, 750 watts, transfered into the room ...most of that just rises to the ceiling. yes the 2kW convector will be better but mainly because it is 750 watts more powerful than the 1.25kW OFX......

Thanks. I would need to clear some space for a second heater. Being wall mounted heaters would need the lekky to come in for a second heater point etc etc £££. The reason I tried the OFX is they have a quiet thermostat click. the convector heaters being affective a big metal box, the thermostat click can be heard round the neighbourhood.

Someone did suggest I get on ebay for a more professional Dimplex panel heater with an electric thermostat as they are truly silent and vary the amount of heat they produce rather than a click on-click off.

    Thanks for your feedback

take a look at Myson Fan convectors, they are wall mountable and come in different sizes/outputs, and blow the warm air downwards ,this would be your better option as they too have 'quiet' stats. off to bed now, good luck.
