Wainwrights food, please help

Hi all, a bit of advice please! Recently been trying to change my 17 motnh old staffys food so its a bit healthier, am currently feeding him pedigree. I found on pets at home website wainwrights adult food trys, on offer, 20% off. I bought 3 boxes of the duck and rice tray, recieved it today and it sayd feeding guidlines, half a tray for my staffys weight, that doesnt seem like a lot of food?
I phoned pets at home and asked and the woman didnt seem like she knew what i was on about, but she said i am supposed to feed him buscuits with it. On the pack it says 'complete balanced dog food' and on the back it states if i am feeding it as a topper to their kibble, not to exceed my dogs nutritional requirements so is this a complete food or do i have to feed him biscuits aswell? Im just a bit confused, and they dont seem to have a website where i can contact? This is the link to what i purchased

  • Was it Pedigree wet food he was on? WW is a complete food I think, but ingredients-wise you're moving from a very low nutrition food to a fairly high nutrition food, so it makes sense to me that you'd feed a lot less of it.

yes pedigree wet food, i feed him 2 400g tins a day, and this wainwrights only says you need to feed half of the tray, its doesnt seem like a lot of food, i know that when its higher nutrition you feed less, but i wouldnt have thought that much less? And pets at home said its just meat and i would need to feed him complete biscuits with it?

Does it say complete food on the tray?

If so then that is what it is - a complete food and it doesnt need to be mixed with a mixer ( canned food is usually missed, kibble is complete, trays can be a minefield)

if its not a complete then think about what soot of complete food you want your doog on - wet or dry.

A good quality complete tray such as naturediet has enough ground bone in it to help with the teeth so a mixer is not required

Kibble - and we are talking premium brands such as James well beloved,Burns, Arden Grange etc also need nothing added and will also be tiny amounts of food

The better the quality the food the less input - and the less out put

Never look at the cost of the pack of food - rather work out cost per meal when looking for value for money

Choose your food to suit your pocket and your ethics - there is no right or wrong. What suits one dog dont suit another so do your own homework and make your own informed choice

thats where i am confused, the tray looks as if it is like some sort of paste? And on the box it says complete balanced dog food, but it doesnt seem right, theres no lumps whatsoever? So are you able to put the tray on top of buscuits, and does it have to be certain biscuits?

Wainwrights also do buscuits if you are looking for kibble. I feed my dogs orijen and prize choice mince. The orijen states for my dogs weight he only needs 150g per day which seems very little. But he's been on it a few weeks and shown now sign of weight loss at all. I also give him a little less to account for adding the mince.

When you feed wet food you have to feed considerably more than when you feed dried complete. The wainwrights dry duck and rice is a complete food and it does look like you arent giving them much when its weighed out . You dont have to add anything to it either. We fed our staffy x lab on this for months when he was really ill with food allergies and he became a perfect weight and his coat got lovely and glossy ...he looked like a black seal , all silky! Not sure what you mean by trays?

doh I am a wally....just gone back and looked at the link (I didnt realise they did wet food too!) and it does say complete wet food so you do not need to add anything to it. I was talking about the complete dry food sorry!

    Its a complete food

Look at the list of ingredients - it should contain bone which is what is used to help keep the teeth clean

However you can mix it with a "MIXER" biscuit. Im not sure what brands there are out there now but a mixer is really just a bit of crunch for the pets teeth. You do not need to mix it with a complete kibble

My personal choice for a wet food will have to be naturediet. I have tried all the others that have come along but naturediet to my mind is the best

thankyou! At last someone who knows lol, so it is definately a complete food, its just strange that i only have to feed him half a tray a day, but i guess its because it is such higher nutrition, my staff is such a ganit tho! Will eat it and probably think...is that it? haha xx

EDIT: Just looked at the ingredients and cannot see bone listed?
    Ingredient(s):

Fresh Duck (min. 65%), Duck Liver (min. 5%), Brown Rice (min. 5%), Minerals, Vitamins, Seaweed, Chicory Root. with Antioxidant EC Additives.

God this is so confusing! I should have just bought the complete kibble but he loves meat so much!

Minerals are the same as bonemeal.

When it comes to a quality food - less in means less out

When you buy cheaper foods they are usually made up of cheap fillers which the dog dooesnt need so therefore poos a lot. They may be getting fed a huge big bowl full but its all coming back out the other end

You may find your pup is looking for extras. If so then pad out with veggies like boiled cabbage, carrots etc . Boiled cabbage is cheap and filling - boil on up and keep it in the fridge to use when needed
