My Cheap Solution - PAYG
I use a jailbroken iPhone - but for any unlocked phone it would be the same. I don't need to buy another handset. Getting a phone unlocked isn't that hard or expensive so in the long run it pays to do it - as long as it doesn't void any warranties.
I wanted a cheap no frills solution; I wanted to phone any network, anytime so switched to Asda's PAYG scheme... 4p per text 8p per minute talk and if you buy the SIM (around 50p) and put some credit on it you get the SIM free! I put £5 on mine when I bought it and got the SIM free.
Top up anywhere with the green top up mobile sign.
125 minutes talk time for a tenner anytime any network, or 250 texts.
Its on the Vodaphone network so coverage is good. There's also an internet option which is ok but I dont use it. I have had no issues since I got it and it works out cheaper than Orange (their free minutes deal was only available at certain times).
Hope this is of use when making a decision - and if anyone knows of a rate cheaper you can use anytime to any network......?

Tesco Lite PAYG is also calls 8p a minute - texts 4p. http://www.tesco.com/mobilenetwork/content.aspx?page=83
You can also log into your account online and block premium rate charged unsolicted texts being received. And parental controls available, if you have a sim for your childs phone.
Tesco credit on PAYG sims never expires. So you don't have to use your phone a certain number of times during a certain period.0 -

Its already been pointed out to you in another thread thats not correct. Sooner or later an unused number willl be recycled.
"5.4 If you do not use your Mobile Phone for six months we will disconnect you and you will lose your Credits and Mobile Phone number. If your Mobile Phone is disconnected and you would like to reconnect it, you must call Customer Care. If we agree to reconnect you, you must pay a reconnection fee. Details of the current reconnection fee are available by calling Customer Care. "

Actually, the cheapest rates are currently on Lyca Mobile http://www.lycamobile.co.uk/lycamobile-plus-rates.aspx?tariff=lycaplus
If you buy £20 and get £30 credit, http://www.lycamobile.co.uk/offers.aspx , then the landline rate works out at 5p*20/30= 3.33p per minute and to mobiles, it is currently 7p*20/30= 4.67p per minute.
Texts are currently free though there is something about top ups per week. It is not completely clear.
This seems the cheapest by far at the moment.0 -
So the OP is telling us all how to save money, but uses an iPhone.

PLEASE DONOT EVER USE LYCAMOBILE they are the biggest con merchants I have had the displeasure to be with and there customer services department based in India is a total disgrace. They dont understand English at all.
1. I ported into them back in October 09 from O2 and had days without a number as there cs team had cancelled my port by mistake on the day of the port.....Long story but had to get Orange involved to speak to them on how to resolve the problem....
2. READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS CLOSELY and there is no such thing as FREE CALLS and TEXTS with them.
3. Lycamobile on ORANGE charges a connection fee of 15p per CALL even to other Lycamobile customers. So the so called FREE call costs 15p and after a set period think around 15 mins then charges at standard rate.
4. Lycamobile on ORANGE does NOT give free texts to other networks just to other Lycamobile numbers. Conditions apply.
AT CHRISTMAS LYCAMOBILE SENT AN EMAIL AND MESSAGE TO ALL ABOUT LYCAMOBILE PLUS SIM CARDS TO UPGRADE....DONT DO THIS AT ALL
1. Lycamobile PLUS is on O2.......Lycamobile cant transfer any numbers or port and numbers into Lycamobile on O2 at all and you have to use a 074 number REGARDLESS if you are with another operator or Lycamobile Orange. Also you cant port out these new 074 numbers.
2. FREE TEXTS TO ANYONE IN WORLD PROMOTION.......Read the small print not the case as you have to TOP UP EACH WEEK TO GET.
3. FREE LYCAMOBILE PLUS CALLS TO LYCAMOBILE PLUS CALLS...No connection fee HOWEVER you MUST TOP UP EACH WEEK......
4. STANDARD RATES.......watch your account closely with these sharks as they charge you the wrong rates.
THE CUSTOMER SERVICE TEAM IN INDIA IS A SHAME THEY CUT YOU OFF AND DO NOT TAKE YOUR CALLS SERIOUS........THEY TALK TO YOU LIKE CR*P AND DO NOT GIVE A SH*T.
I asked for my PAC Code of them and they wouldnt give it to me at first as they where saying "Whats the problem" etc and when I explained why they wouldnt listen and cut you off.
Eventually after speaking to O2 I called a company called LYCATEL in London who owns Lycamobile and after OFCOM was involved they eventually gave me my PAC code.......For what reason they didnt give me I dont know.......You have to fight to get your PAC code off them.
If you have issues with Lycamobile DO NOT CALL 322 on your mobile waste of time. Call LycaTel on 020 75366450 and DEMAND you speak to an English speaking person about your problems.
Hurray I leave them next week thank god.0
