bt wont change my name over on contract wiothought cancelling and paying full fee

we have always had our phone with bt and before xmas decided to take out broadband with them me and my husband are now getting divorced because the ohone has always been in his name the bt went into his as it was taken out from the same bill i contacted bt to explain he has moved out and i wanted the bill transferred into mine and they have told me i would have to cancle the contract and pay the full 18 months up as a penalty how hard can it be for them to switch a mr to a mrs ?why should i have to pay all that im not happy with their service already they were late connecting us i cant access my e-mails as they want to speak to the account holder which is in my husbands name and he has moved out and the passwords they sent out do not work i am getting the connection goes down every once in a while too for several minutes so there s a fault there somewhere too i just dont know what to do i cant afford to pay up is there anyobody who can advise me on how to get out of this situation withought having to pay 18 months of £15 up ???

    You just need to come to an amicable arrangement with your ex for him to keep paying the bill and you then pay him.

    You do actually have the upper hand in this - it won't be you that gets chased by BT's debt collectors if payments stop - it's in his name not yours.

    A name change on the account is considered as a fundamental change and so you will start a new contract. Change the DD details onto your account with your ex's agreement, but leave the account in his name.
    They'll do a name change without penalty in the case of death, but not for divorce I'm afraid.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    i'm sure the bt rep will pop up soon, they are very helpful.

    but how about putting it in joint names then removing one down the line??

    I do have to advise that the current process is as you were advised when you called into Customers Services. The posters on this thread have pretty much advised the options available to you and the account holder already.

    This process can seem awkward but is designed to protect both parties.
