So you need at least two new brake discs, with new discs you'll also need new pads as a matter of course.

Then fashioning the pipes requires special tools, and time and patience as the old pipes have to be removed and replaced. This often requires a significant amount of work as they need to be shaped around the various internal components and structures of the car.

£300 is a bargain if you ask me. Your OH, if he doesn't know how to manufacture brake pipes, will be creating a possible death trap.

I totally agree. My mate was quoted £300 just for front discs and pads on his 10 year old Peugeot, so I did them (it still cost £140 all in).
You are probably looking at four to five hours work all in, with no complications, so £300 seems fair to me.
People often think that all you do, is take a few bolts off, replace the old parts with new, and drive away. There should be a fair bit of cleaning up to do, particularly calipers, making sure the mating surfaces are spotless. Then you have the extra complication of brake lines, and the bleeding of the system (may need a fluid change IMO).
How much did the OP think was a fair figure?

What year, model and engine size (ie 95 1.3LX)

Any good motor factor should be able to look it up and tell you though (or take the wheel off and have a look!) :D
